Everybody’s An Expert Since HGTV Or So They Think...

HGTV has given the average person not only ideas but also the confidence that they think they are now experts! Expert enough to think that they can pull off renovating their homes, designing it by themselves, decorating it, staging it and even selling it.
Watch enough shows and you can DIY all of these without the need of a professional because they make them look so easy to do on TV.  Not to mention that they not only look easy to do, but take much less time, and usually cost a lot less money as well.  Real life is not what is portrayed on TV.
  • Home Renovations
  • Interior Design
  • Home Selling
  • Home Buying
  • Home Staging
  • Landscaping
Here are a few of the most popular HGTV shows.
  • FixerUpper
  • Love It or List It
  • HouseHunters
  • Flip or Flop
  • Curb Appeal
  • Beachfront bargain Hunt
  • Property Brothers
  • Rehab Addict
  • HGTV dream home
  • Listed Sisters
Do you feel confident enough to tackle home renovations by yourself? Or do you agree that it’s best to call in a professional? What about permits? Inspections ?  Those are rarely discussed on the TV shows.
Homeowners that tackle renovations without the proper permitting and inspections will face serious consequences down the road when it comes time to sell and these issues are uncovered later on.
I owned an Interior Design Company many years ago prior to all of the DIY shows. Many designers I talk to today have expressed to me that they are shocked that so many people feel they can easily do what a designer or contractor does just because they have watched a few shows on TV or Youtube.
In the State of Florida Interior Designers are Licensed by the State as are Building Contractors, Landscape Architects, Real Estate Brokers and Sales professionals. All of these professions are licensed and insured for a reason, and all of these professionals are also required to meet continuing education guidelines every licensure period to make sure that they are up to date on changes in their respective industries.
It can be very risky for homeowners to tackle projects where a professional should be called in.  Having the job done professionally will save money and a great deal of headaches later on.  Watch the shows and get some great ideas, but don't forget to call in the professionals to actually do the job the right way.

Hi Joyce Marsh, Luxury Market Specialist - I worked on a Sedona home for "Vacation Homes For Free" with Matt Blashaw.  He does a great job but it is all show. Matt actually has a real estate license and does contractor work but you are so right. These are just TV shows.  There are local contractors who do all the work and the "stars" film in two days and even change clothes to make it look like a different day. (Opps!  That is supposed to be a secret!) They do some quick segments and the crew shoots a lot of B roll.  On my shoot, they hired a stager from Phoenix to stage everything and right after the shoot, it was all taken out!

I also think false expec6ations are set in the speed of a resulting sale.   Market forces are ignored.   Fun to watch, though!

Here is a shot from the show. Matt Blashaw (right) and Joshua Lovell are buiding a fire pit. (so it appears!) Joshua's crew actually built it. HGTV Sedona Vacation Homes for Free Matt Blashaw

I wrote a blog post at one point that there nothing real about reality TV, Joyce. And isn't that the truth? I'll say one good thing about these types of home shows... at least now when I go into a house and talk about staging and decluttering I don't get that deer in the headlights look as much as I used to.

Joyce, not wanting to make light of it but it reminds me of the Motel 6 commercial of yester years..... indeed everyone is an expert... when I had my first house I was going to do a lot of things to improve it... a quick walk to the equivalent of Home Depot in CT and I was ready to take 12 layers of paint off an Old Home.... then I was pulling up the carpets to fix and bring life back to the Hardwood floors... then I started the ceiling... anyway all unfinished projects and I felt bad for the Realtor but she was able to show the potential to someone else.... TV shows are great for inspiration, but they don't show all the perspiration it really takes to get anything DONE RIGHT.

I don't watch any of the HGTV flip/fix it shows--they can make it look easy.  Better to get a trusted professional to do the job

It does lead to overconfidence in some, but the shows do provide inspiration as well.  #ShipLap  Ha!

Hi Joyce

Very well said. The DIY movement has certainly gained a lot of interest and momentum as a result of these shows.

Li Read I agree completely. Everything sells so fast on the TV shows. Unfortunately that portrays an unrealistic view of what normally happens in the real marketplace

Good point Nina Hollander the shows have educated the public about the importance of staging and decluttering which helps us tremendously. Hope you are enjoying some spring weather now.
