Book Smart | Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover

Real Estate Broker/Owner with KD Realty - 408.972.1822 CA BRE#01366594

I had a discussion with a friend and ActiveRain member just the other day. We were discussing "intelligence" and the difference between "higher education" obtaining degrees, and "common sense" which we know is not common at all.

I explained that I know many people with only a high school education that are FAR smarter than many people I know that have 4-year degrees, a master's degree, a Ph.D. and a JD degree.

I shared a story about a friend who graduated summa cum laude. For being so smart, and graduating with the highest distinction, my friend did not know what summa cum laude meant. Perhaps my friend did not read that book.  Do you see the irony?

 Book Smart

We've been asked to have some FUN with the Book Smart photo provided by the host of this challengeEndre Barath, Jr.

I am not an artsy-fartsy person.  Never have been. I've never had a real, true "appreciation" for art.  That's okay with me.  I do love to read books though. I love to read. I love to learn. I've never grown old or tired of reading and learning.

What is a "Know it All"?

No one person knows everything. Yet, I bet we have all met that person who thinks they do.

Do we need to read books and enjoy art to have a full life and be successful?

I do not believe so. I know too many people personally and know of many highly successful people that only have high school educations.

Books are available to everyone.  We don't need educational institutions to learn.

Some of my biggest learning experiences came from LIFE. Nothing I knew or any degree could have prepared me for those life lessons.

Fun with the Photo - My Story

This photo is an artists depiction of a former male model who read few if any books. His skill with books was to walk with stacks of books on his head, which he "mastered". One unfortunate day, while on the catwalk, he tripped, fell, and injured his right eye. The injury ultimately led to the demise of his modeling career.

This caused him to look into a career in real estate.  Why not?  Real estate is easy. Anyone can do it. We all know that - right?

He enrolled in an online real estate pre-licensing school in the state of Utah. It remains unclear if there are any required books in this school. We do know the school adopted the ActiveRain colors evidenced the color of the school jacket and tie!

Today, this Realtor is very successful.  He continues to sport the GQ model look and wears the eye patch as a badge of honor. He does not need the eye patch. He just wears it well and thinks it is cool. He "learned" that it is a conversation piece and opens the door with many people for him to tell his story about why and how he became a real estate agent.

Book Smart

Spoiler Alert:  The story he tells is slightly different than mine. His story explains why he started smoking cigars and when he started teaching courses in real estate.

Kathleen Daniels - Oh my gosh! Kathleen your creativity is brilliant! It was thoroughly entertaining!  I love your interpretation. Thanks for the belly laugh. Boy, did I need it today!

It has been a long time since any contest here on ActiveRain gave out extra points for First, Second, and Third Place. I know it's still early in the month, but I would still vote on yours for #1.

Well said and well thought out.  Nina Hollander shared with you how my father interpreted degrees, even though he was a professor of phyics and related fields.  There are know it alls in every profession, it is how they get their confidence in life.  A

Good morning, Kathleen Daniels I enjoyed your interpretation of that piece of art...and I agree that one does not need a PhD to soar with the eagles... the PhD's usually don't make it beyond a year...

Common sense coupled with being well-read and knowledgable can be a powerful comination for success. However, as you say in your post, book smart means very little without common sense.

The second part of this made me laugh, my sister and I used to walk around the house with books on our heads, then we'd try running, then jumping. Naturally they fell off once we starting the jumping. Model prep? NEVER. Just a couple of goofy girls surviving an Alaska winter.

Thanks for this enjoyable read.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - well this girl did walk with books on her head and it was for modeling.  I actually did trip on a runway and only injured my pride.

You and your sister found ways to entertain yourself during an Alaska winter. I've been to Alaska many times during the summer.  I'm sure I would not enjoy an Alaskan winter.

It sounds like you and your sister have been close your entire lives.  That is a wonderful thing.  Not all sisters and families are as close as yours.

Thank you for stopping by and commenting.

Kathleen, how very fascinating! This man sounds quite multi-dimensional. There is a book called Emotional Intelligence, which most likely supports not "book smarts" but the many other ways to be and become intelligent. I can't quote from any of it---bet my hubby could tho! (Who happens to be the smartest man in the room wherever he is, but so very humble). He only completed a couple of years of college. But, for several years, he's been published nationally in EMS magazines and has been called upon numerous times to be a national speaker.

Proud of him? Respect him?? You BET!.

There are many jack of all trades and master of none but there are some who are jack of all specific trades and master of all. Most everybody I encounter has a PHD, so that acronym doesn't mean much, Public High-school Diploma and the best of the rest shall remain anonymous. It doesn't matter who you are but what you did because that will define who you are, doesn't it? Regardless, an enjoyable post!

Interesting story about the model..he's got  a great attitude. I've learned this lesson with houses too..sometimes, not much curb appeal but inside is a perfect fit for the buyer

Came over to read your entry after Patricia Feager mentioned it several times. Loved it, great angle and totally agree, education does not necessarily mean someone is smart, you can be book smart and have no street smarts.
