Decorators Prefer a Neutral Palette

By
Real Estate Agent with Huckaby Briscoe Conroy Group - Keller Williams 76661

It is commonly thought that when selling a home that everything should be neutral in order to appeal to the broadest market possible.  This includes wall colors, bathroom and kitchen fixtures and cabinetry, and floor coverings.  This offers a blank slate for the buyer’s own taste and personality.

The neutral palate can be in the warm colors which would be in the beige family and the cool colors would have more of a gray tint.  Classics survive trends and fads in home ownership as well as in fashion.  There is a design element to all parts of a home.  Throughout there are doors and door hardware, light fixtures and trim work.  Floor covering materials include hardwood, engineered products, tile, stone materials and carpet.  Kitchens and bathrooms have design elements in the appliances, fixtures, backsplash and surrounds and countertops.  Intricate tile design that is seen in all the trendy model homes now in ten years can appear very dated.

Some may feel that too much focus on a home with a neutral palate may feel bland and can shout “boring!”

Color and texture can be added with both decorative and functional pieces.  Window treatments, throws, pillows and rugs are some of the soft ways to personalize and brighten up a space.  Art work, wall hangings and lamps can serve as accent pieces that finish the desired look.  Potted plants and flowers lend life and vibrancy.  The most interesting color combinations are those that show contrast and interest.  The idea is to accentuate the positive features of the home, not to overpower.

Neutral colors are more pleasing to the senses and increase the likelihood of a home appealing to more Buyers.  That’s why we as experienced real estate professionals have found decorators prefer to start with that palette.

Karen Briscoe and Lizzy Conroy and their team of agents at HBC Group at Keller Williams would be delighted to help you navigate the process, whether selling or buying a home.  Our group of active and experienced Realtors® in the Northern Virginia, suburban Maryland and Washington, DC market place consider it an honor to improve and impact lives. Good afternoon Karen. I think that it is easier to imagine most things with a neutral palette.
