Green Eggs and Ham

The US Political field has an agenda of doing away with fossil fuels of any sort and replacing with solar and wind energy.

There has been a push to do away with fossil fuels since I was a teenager and remember being taught we would run out of petroleum by the time I was Sixty; oh and that has long passed.

The big kick then was nuclear power that would sustain us for years and years and we are seeing that come to an end and now the problem is the storage of poorly maintained waste in Nevada.

While I am in favor of alternatives our infamous government and so-called socialist youngster have proposed solar and wind to supply the electric for the future. This would be a grand idea except the solar panels and batteries have a life of between 10 to 25 years. The solar panels themselves are considered (solar panels create about 300 times more toxic waste per unit of electricity generated than nuclear power plants) hazardous waste and no one has explained what they will do with it in the near future. The ion batteries also are very expensive to recycle and could be a huge fire risk if not disposed of properly.
Personally, it seems anything government touches becomes a quagmire, from health care, education recycling, and other mundane topics.
I am hoping Da'Vinci or a science fiction author comes up with a better solution than what is being shoved down our throats.

Raymond E. Camp Certainly, you could not be pointing your finger at the girl wonder out of NYC who single-handedly shoved Amazon out the door?  The voters get what they deserve in electing fools.  Sad for you though!

Not just her but the one from Ca. and quite a few others.

It was not just her that got them out of NY.

Wind power is similarly inefficient, especially cost-wise. My son (who builds power lines) says it takes just about as long for them to become profitable as it does for them to wear out. And then there's the problem of dead birds...

And... electric cars. Did you read the horrible story about the batteries? It seems the essential component, cobalt, comes from mines in Africa and is so toxic that no animals or vegetation grows near them - and the ore is being sorted by children as young as 4 years old - working 10 and 12 hour days.

I believe it was Ronald Reagan who said some of the scariest words in the world were "I'm from the government and I'm here to help."

Morning Raymond.

Man did you ever hit the nail on the head with this one.  I wonder where we'll be in 50 years, I won't be around but my grandchildren will.

It seems kind of like a lose/lose situation.  Maybe we should all go back to horse and buggies.

Thanks so much for sharing this very interesting post.

I had not given any thought to the disposition of those old solar panels.

We are off the grid and have lots of solar panels.  Some of them are already 30 years old and still producing electricity.  I'm a believer in PV, especially now that it's so much cheaper and more efficient.  Wind, it's great when it works, but all those moving parts can only take so much.  Hydro-electric is a good source of power.

Hi Raymond E. Camp - Good discussion! We have to be very smart moving forward. As pointed out, there are a lot of points to be made on both sides. Now that we know some of the downfalls of alternative energy, we need to continue to be creative to reduce the toxic and negative effects of each energy source while maintaining or reducing the cost.  Not an easy task at all but we have the resources including the brightest people to work on the energy issue. I didn't hear anything about natural gas which is a clean fuel that also has great promise. I don't think we should discount any advancements including fossil fuels. Also, if you think that the alternative is to get rid of cows and airplanes than I just feel very, very sorry for you!

No, Sheri Sperry - MCNE® I am not a proponent of doing away with the cows, planes, semi-trucks or motorcycles.

Raymond E. Camp - I'm afraid too many consumers are jumping on the wrong board and not knowing the ramifications for their decisions. I recall friends of mine saying their neighbor's house was delayed in closing for about five months because they had Solar Panels on their roof and couldn't close until it was legal.

Hello Raymond - although I am late to seeing/reading this post one of the benefits of being late(this time) is to see some of the comments which provides the basis of an interesting conversation/discussion.  Hopefully, we can actually see the forest through the times when we listen.
