Owls at the Wild Birds Unlimited Store in Carlsbad

I was out running errands, and stopped at the Wild Birds Unlimited Store in Carlsbad to load up on thistle seed for the finches, and more hummingbird/oriole nectar - we've been told people are starting to see the orioles around again so we want to be prepared with nectar, and the grape jelly they love, at the feeders.

Great Horned Owl in Carlsbad

There was a wildlife protection organization there with 3 owls - a Great Horned Owl, a Barn Owl, and a Screech Owl, talking about what they do and answering questions about the owls. We hear the Great Horned Owl near our house at night fairly regularly but you never get to see them. What a treat! The lighting was a challenge and my camera phone did only a modest job (OK maybe it was me!).

Those are amazing photos, Jeff. My sorority's (Chi Omega) symbol is the owl, so they have a special place in my heart and I actually have a gold owl on my charm bracelet, as well as a little gold necklace with an owl.

Hi Nina Hollander

Wow, that's pretty cool. I've heard of Chi Omega but had no idea.

We hardly ever see the owls so it was such fun. I was able to see some owlettes on a tree at my Mom's old house back east a number of years ago - what a treat.

That's such a sweet little bird, Jeff. Not sure I've actually every seen a live owl except at a zoo or bird preserve.

Back in the day....when macrame was all the crafty rage I remember showing a house that had owls EVERYWHERE....macrame,  ceramic, pictures...every room felt  like someone was staring at you from every possible angle.  A good collection to put in storage BEFORE you list !

Hi William Feela

I've only heaard 1 type of owl near our current house but back in New England we hear several. I know some other people who are not awed by the sound of owls. I happen to enjoy it!

Hi Brian England

It's a great birdstore and we buy our supplies there. Seeing the owls at this event was such fun - I had no idea this was going on, and just happened to stop by.

Great photos, you are being too modest. I love owls, and we hear them regularly but also rarely if ever see them. I saw a baby a couple of years ago sitting on a branch and was so surprised almost forgot to take a photo.
