GET IN FRONT OF CHANGE

By
Education & Training with Performance Development Strategies

Everyone I speak to tells me that they hate change.  But since change in inevitable why not be proactive and get in front of it.  As the earth moves everything changes. Cars change, technology changes, and business practices change. What you did to get to where you are today will not get you to where you want to go tomorrow.   If you want to continue hold onto your customers and market share you must adapt to changing times. And if you want to move forward you need to anticipate and get ahead of change.

Why do people resist change? Why do people continue to do the same things although they are no longer getting the results they once achieved?

If we understand why we resist change, we can overcome the obstacles that are holding us back. If we overcome obstacles to change, we can make progress even to the point of getting in front of change or changing on our terms. Here are four reasons why people resist change.

The first is FEAR. Fear is internal; it’s in our head. Fear is the great crippler of human potential. There’s also an acronym that uses the letters F, E, A, and R that defines what fear is.

•          F – false

•          E – emotions

•          A – appearing

•          R – real

The second reason people resist change is because of EGO. The need to be right is a powerful human need. It’s a common problem with leaders, managers, and business owners. When was the last time you have heard someone so, “Well this is the way we have always done it”

The third reason why people resist change is to avoid CONFLICT. When you try to leave all the people back in their comfort zone called the “Land of Status Quo,” you’ll create and get some conflict. It’s not comfortable and it is not fun, so many people just avoid it all together.

The fourth reason that people resist change is LACK OF PURPOSE. Without a sense of purpose, people become stagnant and complacent. People get burnt out.

As a leader of yourself and others, you will need to overcome your own fear and help others overcome theirs by helping them change their mental attitudes that hold them back. You also must make sure that your EGO doesn’t get in the way.

By being open to new and different ways to view things, as well as being open to the feedback and insights of others, you create an atmosphere where change is not an “I’m right and your wrong” mentality.

Change Management

In the short book, “Who Moved My Cheese”, a story is told of four characters who deal with change and loss. It illustrates that change is not about knowledge and skills but attitudes and behaviors and above all, conquering our fears. In the book cheese stands for what we define as success.

Remember; keep checking the condition of your cheese. Don't wait until it disappears or gets bad. Get in front of change and make the change on your terms.  For a similar blog on our web site see HANDLE CHANGE ON YOUR TERMS.

Hi Grant Schneider, whether we like it, ready for it or not, change happens. Some people truly have a hard time dealing with it though, they just get too comfortable where they are.  Great post!

Grant,

I know some hate change, and the saying goes that "only babies like change."  Every moment there are changes of one sort or another around us, the weather, our bodies, the flora and fauna that surround us , etc.  We see change as something that keeps us in the know, vibrant and happy to be alive!    It brought to mind this quote,

“The future is already here – it's just not evenly distributed.

Well done Grant!!! And, very timely as I keep reading posts about change coming. Change is always coming...it's always around the corner. We can't control when and we can't control the fact that there will be change. What we can control is how we respond to change.

Change for the sake of change is not always productive. But we all better be reinventing the way we provide real estate service. Or you will die a dinosaur wearing a rusted R. Better more powerful ways to deliver service at a lower cost of time and money. That's just good business and removing slack or waste. Be a digital not analog agent, broker, REALTOR. Old ways can be comfy and familiar... but go out where you can not touch, closer to the deep end and stretch your boundary limitations.

Endre - thank you.  I would add that one as well.

Andrew -  for sure change without purpose is seen as the flavor of the month.

Agreed: Fear does keep people resisting change.  We have to be aware of any change in the multi-dimensional business/marketing world, especially the latter as it pertains to online digital.  Right now, there are trends that are leaving other formats behind and we should be able to absorb and utilize new ways of marketing to keep on top and hopefully ahead of the curve.  Thank you, Grant.

I like the analogy!

By being open to new and different ways to view things, as well as being open to the feedback and insights of others, you create an atmosphere where change is not an “I’m right and your wrong” mentality.

Hi Grant:

I think understanding the issues around why people resist change is the first step toward making a change. I think fear is a big one!
