St. Patrick’s Day is this weekend and it is one of the yearly celebrations that surround a night (or several) of partying and drinking with other enthusiastic people. You don’t need to drink to have fun on this day, but a lot of people use it to really let loose. We will be conducting showings for our Denver property management portfolio this weekend, so no time for any of that. But there are some facts we would like to share, that help support the idea that everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. Irish American’s history stretches back to the Colonial era, and a vibrant set of facts has been immortalized by historians and the U.S. Census Bureau. 22 of the US presidents had Irish Roots and Andrew Jackson was the only president who had two parents born in Ireland. 9 signatories of the 1776 Declaration of Independence were either Irish immigrants or descended from Irish immigrants. More than 20 of George Washington’s Revolutionary War generals and the first man to hold a commission in the Navy were Irish. In the 1861 to 1865 Civil War, over 190,000 Irish-born Americans fought and the Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest US military honor, has been awarded to 253 Irish-born men. That means men of Irish descent have been awarded this more than awardees of any other nation, except for the United States themselves. So, you can see there is quite a bit of Irish blood in our country, to go along with our celebrations. In fact, more than 34 million Americans can claim Irish ancestry. That is over 7 times the population of Ireland itself. So, even if you aren’t drinking this weekend, use this opportunity to celebrate your own interpretation of Irishness, Irish or not. This day is for everyone.
