The City of Scottsdale Arizona issued a challenge and a contest to the public in 2018 to come up with a newe identifiable logo and use it in a flag that best represented the City. Scottsdale's old roots were identified in the slogan, "The West's Most Western Town" and was originally, back in the day, characterized by a Western themed downtown and dude ranches.

Many of these Western ideals are passing as Scottsdale has been rated in the top 10 in National surveys recently in categories as Best Place to Find a Job, Best Foodie Cities, Best Place to Raise a Family etc.. One just does not see a lot of cowboys walking around Scottsdale in the 2000s. Scottsdale has the highest price per/sf for homes for cities over 200,000 population in the State of Arizona. One looks around and sees plenty of resort hotels with new ones going up (not Dude Ranches) and a strong art district and gourmet restaurants.

The City had thought it was important to come up with a flag that represented the New Scottsdale with maybe a memory of the Western based past. Many submissions were received, but the City was not happy with them and decided to stick with the old traditional Cowboy based flag. Sometimes, remembering our Scottsdale roots and history is good after all.

Lorraine Longhi, Arizona Republic reported on March 6, 2019, "Scottsdale leaders aren't ready to give up on its iconic mounted cowboy on the city flag."

Further, "The City Council backtracked Tuesday on its Feb. 19 decision to adopt a new city flag featuring a saguaro blossom.

"Personally I think it's best we stay where we are, and if it's to be reconsidered again we'll take that up at a later time," Mayor Jim Lane said.

Councilwoman Kathy Littlefield agreed. "This has been a very, very divisive issue that's come before us," she said.

A city flag falls several rungs below the U.S. or even the Arizona flag in prominence, flown mainly on municipal properties. But the proposal touched on what has been a lightning rod issue for Scottsdale: finding an agreed upon city identity amid change.

The cowboy honors the history of the city that made a name for itself as the "West's Most Western Town," while the saguaro blossom sought to reflect its evolution.

"We've evolved from a cowtown to a very sophisticated center of commerce and quality of life," Councilwoman Virginia Korte had said when she voted in favor of the new flag last month.

In the end, the council rescinded that decision in a 5-2 vote Tuesday with Korte and Vice Mayor Linda Milhaven dissenting. "

Longhvi reported, "The city had selected a new flag after opening the process to community submissions. The city received 260 designs and about 2,800 pieces of feedback from the public, city spokesman Kelly Corsette said.

Addressing the council ahead of the vote, Corsette said he was confident a new flag, "given time to become known and understood in the community, would take a meaningful place alongside our iconic horse and rider symbol."
