How Often Do You Say "Today I Will..." And Never Do It !!!

Discipline is a learned task. Not everyone is disciplined. It's a simple task to be disciplined with a routine we thoroughly enjoy.

As an example, I'm up very early every morning to prepare for my morning workout at the YMCA. That takes discipline. One of the guys I workout with constantly says "the toughest part of a workout is getting here."  Oh how right he is!! It takes discipline just to get there, and once you're there, it all falls into place.

Apply that same principle to a task that you dread doing every day. It's hell, except 100 times worse. I'll never forget a comment I read from an ActiveRain member when I first joined.

I had just posted an open house "reminder" because I had already posted a series of open house events on Thursday in preparation for a Sunday open house. We were a few hours prior to the open house beginning, and the AR member commented that she too had an open house but didn't think of writing a post about it.  So she decided to post one just before the event happened!!

That post was as useless as the "quick reminder" that I posted. The quality posts were posted days in advance, but I had prepared to do it. It was one of the many disciplined online routines that I needed to carve in stone to continue to make the phone ring. That discipline became a recurring routine because I made that happen.

How many real estate agents are disciplined with their marketing. All competitive sports require discipline. I continually read blog posts here that describe real estate as a competitive sport.  Therefore, we know the marketing that makes the phone ring must be accomplished in a disciplined fashion.

My direct mail postcards are like clockwork. Within hours of a new listing submitted to MLS, the postcards are being printed. The same for a signed p & s for sale pending postcards, and a recorded deed prior to the closed postcard. Clockwork. Discipline. Focus. I could fill a page with the action words and learned skills required to market properly.

Just another thought for the moment…. Yes, pondering, Michael!!

I must admit I have done a whole lot more slacking this winter than I normally do.  I can remember last autumn when it was still warm out, I vowed to do certain projects inside my house when the winter rains came.  While I have completed some things, much of the time I only want to hibernate!  Interestingly, yesterday was gorgeous here in Sacramento.  It was sunny and about 75 degrees.  What did I do, I cleaned out the garage!

Hi Barbara... I suppose we all have those days when we say "I will" but "don't." But hopefully those days are few and far between.

That's too funny, Barbara... I do just the opposite... I get all my CE done as soon as possible so it's not hanging over my head. I have a CE class in April on wire fraud and it will actually count for 2020 CE credits.

Barbara if I say I am going to do something I do it no matter how much I don't want to.  It is not easy, and I am often tempted to not follow through, but it isn't in my nature.  For me it is a sense of duty, and not following through is not an option.

It seems there is a lot of pondering going on in the Rain these days, Michael Jacobs has certainly encouraged all of us in that aspect.  If I say I will do something, then I will definitely do it, that is just how I roll.  There are always things that I don't really want to do, which I may or may not do, but I certainly wouldn't say I am going to do it, if I know I am on the fence, haha.

Barbara,

Neither one of us has trouble with discipline, we just get it done.  It is like brushing one's teeth every morning and every evening...And that includes the discipline of taking a break and doing nothing!  A

I make a daily to do list. Some days I may not hit everything on it but the fact that a list exists helps me get much more done than if this list didn't exist at all.

This is a helpful formula too... "X" + Action = Results.

For a lot of things, all you have to do is apply action to the task and you should have some sort of result!

Jason Potrzeba simple formula with big results.... and I've been doing lists for 41 years of real estate.... lists work well for me, and my day does not end until everything on the list has been checked off....

HI Nina Hollander - You are so right about posting open houses days in advance.  I also get them on the MLS.  They will show up when you google for open houses! Nice job.

Hi Barbara:

I bet most of us have those times when we are less disciplned than we should be but hopefully they are minimal and don't involve something serious. Keeping a To Do and using checklists for various aspects of my business helps me...and my clients. And sometimes life interferes unexpectedly.

Jeff
