Whether you are a Real Estate Agent or a Mortgage Lender, WE ARE REAL ESTATE PROFESSIONALS and it is our duty to responsibly help our Clients navigate through life transitions. Some of these transitions can be viewed as positive and happy, such as helping them buy their first homes, up-size due to family growth and/or job promotions, or even buying their first rental property. That said, other transitions may be negative and not-so-happy, such as death, divorce and/or financial hardships.
This brief article is meant to focus on divorce...specifically, helping Divorcing Homeowners to make educated decisions about their real estate and secured residential debts. As both a Certified Divorce Lending Professional (CDLP) and Real Estate Collaborative Specialist - Divorce (RCS-D), I have successfully persevered through 2 different strenuous curriculum's centered around divorce, real estate, taxation, and mortgage lending. When I last checked, I was the only professional in California who had completed both of these high level curriculums. These credentials are offered through different companies, each led by dymanic women who can be accurately referred to as experts in this field. As one of them has not authorized me to disseminate or reproduce any of their information, I will focus on the Divorce Lending Association in this article.
The President & Founder of the Divorce Lending Association is Jody Bruns. In October, 2017, Jody authored a book titled A House Divided: The Clash Between Divorce, Real Estate and Mortgage Financing (a must read for any Real Estate, Legal or Mortgage Professionals who assist Divorcing Homeowners). Ms. Bruns asserts that there are 4 distinct "puzzle pieces" (shown in the image below) representing different essential professionals who often only focus on their own "puzzle piece" while failing to collaborate with the other "professionals/pieces". The net result is that the Divorcing Homeowner, who is often amidst one of the largest emotional traumas of their adult life, is now forced to connect the pieces together.

In closing, it takes more care, compassion, and due dilgence to assist Divorcing Homeowners at a high level. This is not a business for opportunistic predators to attempt to seek a commission at the expense of someone else's traumatic event. As a committed Certified Divorce Lending Professional, I feel compelled to articulate that the entire focus of this niche is on protecting the Consumer.
With the above in mind, nothing about this niche is meant on any level to disrespect the sanctity of marriage, celebrate the fact that many marriages end in divorce, nor is it intended to encourage anyone to break up marriages in order to earn a commission.
