Summer Reading Proves to Be Vital
So many teachers send home "summer packets" and expect that kids will complete them or parents will enforce them. This isn't always the case but it's not because parents don't care. I have found, as a parent myself, that it's because most of the time, parents have no idea why these packets are sent home.
Parents Must Understand the Slide
We know that by the next fall our children will have a new teacher and therefore, that packet won't be "graded" or count towards anything. Our kids tend to feel like they worked all year long for their summer break, so why not just let them relax!?
A big problem that I have discovered is that teachers and school administration often preach so much about the summer slide or summer recession that they tend to think all parents know what it is. In fact, more than half of families have no idea that children lose a huge portion of their reading and math skills over the summer months.
Summer Learning Gives Kids An Edge
Not only is it important for parents to continue education in whatever way possible with children over summer break, it is also incredibly vital that children understand the reasoning behind this push!
The statistics are shocking and give great arguement to the fact that we need to push our children to read for fun, engage them in educational activities they enjoy, and keep their brains from taking a summer siesta! You can find tons of tips for preventing the summer slide right here!
