When you have kids...

Real Estate Agent with Edina Realty

Prepping your home for sale is a challenge all in itself. Cleaning out the clutter, boxing up the extras, unloading the unwanteds and fixing the things that have been on the "to do" or "ignore" list long enough. It is a whole new ball of wax when you have littles running around with boundless energy and a seemingly important job of slowing you down at every turn. As unintentional as it is sometimes the kiddos, well, they kinda make things a bit more interesting.

Honestly, most days it is a challenge to clean a home with the youngers constantly adding to the clutter. In my house it goes a little like this: I clean the living room top to bottom picking up all the toys and papers, sweeping the floors and getting all the tv remotes put away. Then I move on to the bathroom. It's like their internal radars go on because I can hear them buzzing by. They flop on the couch and take off their socks, throwing their book or schoolwork on the couch and suddenly remembering they have stomachs they run off to the kitchen to grab a snack. Only thing? Somehow the snack remnants stay on the counter while they hunker down on the couch (socks and papers and books forgotten) with their laptops in full game mode or the tv on watching their favorite show. This game could go on for quite some time. And it isn't that they are irresponsible, it is more like they are just being.

Now take that dynamic and try to sell your home or buy a new one? Things could really really get interesting.

Some of my favorite clients are the children. They have minds and emotions that matter so much in the real estate transaction. Their fears, their excitement, their happiness and their sadness. It all matters. And with mom and dad cleaning out the house? I can only imagine the added emotion! Over the years I have had the opportunity to watch many parents include their families into the process of selling and buying homes in many ways. And I have had the opportunity to witness firsthand the journey and stories that come alive when families move. It is always a wonder to me that they make it appear so smooth because I know that it isn't all fun and games when families are making such big decisions.

The following  is a little reminder that when you have kiddos in a house sale... you are gonna have stories to tell. And those stories? It is what makes the journey. And that journey will be filled with so many memories!!  Whether they've left the dirty underwear on the floor for buyers to see, or they stomped thru with muddy feet before your next showing - take a deep breath and know that kids will be themselves. :) And it's okay.

A couple years ago I was sitting in an open house with a lender that I know. The home was rather large and happened to sit on a couple of acres (quite wooded and private). The weather had just turned nice in the spring and buyers were started to come out of hibernation to get their sneak peeks at what the real estate market had to offer. We had a handful of couples thru and were nearly done with our open house when the 'family' came in. A mom and a dad with a couple of teenagers. Three. Two boys and a girl. They scoped out the home and the parents were chatting with the lender a bit so the youngers were checking out the dining room and living room windows. I nearly choked on my spit when one of the boys leaned to the other one and said, "So... do ya think the neighbors would see us if we were standing here in our underwear?"

Hmmm...well isolation with larger lots certainly presents some "freedoms" !

Great Post, Lindsey. It can be stressful trying to keep a home show ready with kids in the picture, but it's okay! It can be done and it doesn't have to be a nightmare. Thanks for sharing.
