Wingate, North Carolina is located about 30 miles south of Charlotte in Union County and about 7.5 miles from Monroe, which is the county seat for Union County. The town has a population of just under 4,000 based on the most recent census. With the recent completion of the Monroe Expressway connecting US Highway 74 to Wingate, Charlotte is now about a 30 minute drive and it's expected that Wingate's population will grow in coming years as a result of this expressway.
Wingate is an old North Carolina city, founded in the late 1890's when Wingate University was established. Thus the town of Wingate and Wingate University have been inextricably linked for over 120 years. Wingate University is a comprehensive, private and growing university, serving 3,600+ students. Situated on a 400-acre main campus in Wingate, the University offers some 35 bachelor's degrees, master's degrees in business, accounting, education, physician assistant studies, and sports administration, as well as doctorate degrees in pharmacy, physical therapy, and education. But there are also satellite campuses in south Charlotte's Ballantyne area and in Hendersonville, North Carolina.
