How to Stay Cool in Epcot

Epcot (originally EPCOT) was opened in Disney World in October of 1982. Basically two parks in one, it consists of Future World (which has more rides) and the World Showcase (which contains 11 pavilions which feature the food and shops of different countries).

Epcot is a total of 300 acres (roughly twice the size of the Magic Kingdom!) which means if you spend the day there -- and particularly if you want to see the entire World Showcase -- you will be doing a lot of walking in the Florida heat.

The same general "keep cool" advice applies to Epcot as it does to any other Disney park -- drink plenty of water, wear sunscreen and moisure-wick clothing, and pace yourselves.

But it's also good to be prepared by knowing about some places where you can duck into air conditioning, or even get wet, when you just have to escape the heat.

Here are some places to cool off in Epcot:

1) Splash Pads at Innoventions -- On the path from Future World to the World Showcase is an oval splash pad with both leap pad and vertical fountains, perfect for kids to play in. You may want to be prepared with bathing suits and/or an extra set of clothes, though -- your kids will probably get drenched!

2) Club Cool -- Does air conditioning and free, unlimited soda sound good to you? Then you'll love Club Cool, a kiosk in Future World sponsored by Coca-Cola. While there isn't any seating, you can hang around as long as you like and sample as many Coke products from different countries as you like. (Some are very good, while others are, um ... not.)

3) The Land Pavilion -- Located in Future World, this is a place where you can escape the heat for quite a while.

There are two indoor rides -- Soarin' Around the World and Living with the Land. If you're hungry, there is an excellent counter service restaurant called Sunshine Seasons which has a lot of variety, including several vegetarian dishes. and great desserts. And if you've planned ahead, you can have a character meal with Mickey Mouse, Pluto, and Chip and Dale at the Garden Grill restaurant

4) American Adventures -- Want to stay cool and also learn something? Inside the America pavilion in the World Showcase, you can rest while watching a 30-minute show with music and animatronics that feature highlights of our nation's history. Make sure you arrive early or stick around afterward so you can hear the singers perform in the lobby.

5) World Showcase Shops -- Take a break from the theme park atmosphere while you roam about a shop in Japan, Germany, Noway, etc, and look for a souvenir for yourself or your friends back home. Don't forget that if you're staying at a Disney resort, you can have anything you buy sent to your room so you don't have to lug it all over the park!
