I might have been on the last hike of the season for me, as the snowbirds that I hike with will be heading home soon.  This hike we came upon a snake that was none too pleased with us, he was curled up and ready to strike.  Luckily for us, he gave us plenty of warning that he was near, so we turned back and headed home.

Good evening Michael Jacobs , I have lived in Arizona pretty much my whole life and have not seen more than 5 snakes, so it is somewhat rare to even see them.  Luckily, if they are close, they usually give warning as well.

We didn't run, but we sure as heck turned around and headed the other way Rebecca Gaujot, Realtor® , I definitely don't want to get in a tussle with one, haha.

They only come out when it gets hot outside Kathy Streib , so if you come during the winter months, the weather is perfect and we won't see any snakes!

You are right Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP , it is good to know which ones are dangerous and which ones aren't, but if it is a snake, I am going to turn tail and figure that out later, haha.  The couple that I hike with the most, I have helped them purchase 4 homes and sell 1 of them, so they are fairly faithful to me!

Most snakes run away when they hear humans trudging through their territory must have been  a baby rattler or a real rattler who stand firm in their territory... wise decision Brian to back track:)Endre

p.s.: are you impressed getting info like this from a city boy?

I am indeed impressed with your knowledge of snakes Endre Barath, Jr. and I think this one was standing it's ground and said none shall pass, haha.

Good morning James Dray , it was not as scary as it sounds and nobody was in true danger.  If we hike in the winter, there is very little chance that we would run into a snake on the trails.  They only come out when it starts getting hot outside.

Hi Brian - good thing you had warning on that.  Sounds like you should have a snake bite kit with you like a well prepared Boy Scout.

I am with you there Georgie Hunter R(S) 58089 , I have lived in Arizona for over 40 years and have only run into a snake twice, so it really isn't that common of an occurrence.

It would be tough to keep up with you sprinting Debe Maxwell, CRS , but remember, you don't need to outrun the snake, you just need to run faster than the person behind you, haha.

5 Snakes is five too many for me, Brian.  However, if I ever got to your area, I would trust going on a hike with you.  I love flowering cactus.  So very pretty in their environment.
