Motivational Monday - Any Given Moment

Most of us are never really fully present in our lives because we are continuously distracted. Our world is filled with distractions and the number of things that can take us away from being focused in the moment seems to be mounting!

Our focus may be on one thing for a few moments, but suddenly another thought, request, call, social media alert or another task comes up and we’re off to address that one, often leaving the primary focus undone. Identify those distractions and develop a plan to avoid them.

Any given moment

If you sense you’re being distracted, STOP. Check in. Carve out a moment to intentionally be present. If you struggle with this, meditation or yoga can help train our minds to become more mindful.

When it comes to being present with others, LISTEN. Listen without the intent to respond. The best way to do that is often training yourself to listen with curiosity, not anticipation.

Mindfulness is more often than not, something we have to train ourselves to do; being present in the moment is not always easy. The number of distractions that we are exposed to seem to be mounting. Besides listening, I’ve found one trick to doing this is with time-blocking.

How is this helpful? My secret is what I call over-blocking. Every single entry on the calendar is intentionally scheduled conservatively, leaving smaller blocks of time for the little things - photographing flowers in the middle of the day, taking those unexpected phone calls, MAKING those spur-of-the-moment phone calls, popping over to Facebook or ActiveRain. Plus, it lowers my stress level when it comes to timliness - I detest tardiness but, that's a whole other post!

Don’t let life pass you by - listen, be mindful and avoid missing those little clues that could be life-changers!

Happy Monday!

Love this so much. The reminder to " just be " is so important because we miss so many opportunities and wonderful moments when we can't be still for just a little while.

Hi Debe, this problem is ALWAYS on my mind.  As soon as you get to your computer there are potentially thousands of things to do.  I have 46 windows open right now.  Talk about distractions!!  Apt blog. Thank you!

Mindfulness is really a form of self-discipline and yet, all we really ever have in life is the present moment. So simple, and yet so complicated for us to wrap our heads around. ha. It's what we strive to do, but we still need to remind one another throughout the day...

Hi Debe:

I particularly liked what you said in your last sentence...BEFORE Happy Monday, that is. I think it sums it all up pretty nicely, and is a good reminder.

Hi Debe,
I love the "listen with curiosity" approach. So many people start contemplating a response before the person speaking is even done talking.   Being present in the moment is so important and, yet, these days, seems more difficult than ever with the constant barage of information and instant response expectations.

I'm a couple days late getting here, so Happy Wednesday!

I have recognized in middle-age that I have a propensity to overcommit and have accepted that "just because I can does not mean I should". When your contemporaries start dying suddenly it is a stark reminder that our time is finite. I started asking myself, "If I dropped dead to morrow, is this what I want to be doing?". It is a pretty good measuring stick for weeding out activities that offer no return.

I hear you, Barbara Todaro! I love to be busy with multiple challenges at once but, still exercising focus on each one as well. It's a challenge that I routinely find myself in and you really do have to drill down to the individual 'muscle' or task, don't you? Great analogy!

Ricki Eichler McCallum, some days the distractions become overwhelming and I just say to myself, 'one thing at a time...' That's the only way to keep your sanity in today's world, isn't it?!!

George Souto, you're so right! Living through Ray's 'hell' (which is what I really do call it!) has also taught me to be overly observant of everything around me, situations that arise and I think sometimes, overly analytical too!

Didn't get here till Wednesday so I'll call this "aWakening Wednesday!"      I was just ruminating on the double entendre of the word PRESENT today: what a happy accident that it also means GIFT.       Great advice on how to actively listen, too.    Thanks!

Debe, this really hit the nail on the head for me today. "Carve out a moment to intentionally be present." Intentional presence is something that is so important, and something we CAN control!

Debe, I love your idea of over-blocking your time. Time blocking has never worked for me (I'm a drop out) because it was too restrictive. I am going to give it another chance and try your approach. My mantra has always been "Live in the Moment" which I think goes hand in hand with mindfulness.

in the past year I certainly have blocked out time with no distractions my Cooper.  He brought me back to being family focused first and working to earn a living and not living for my job.  I still love what I do and focus on work when I should, but not all the time anymore.
