If you appreciate nature like we do, this a book you will enjoy. Roy sums up the plot well, and gives you some insight into the talented author, Delia Owens. We saw her interviewed on CBS Sunday Morning, and heard her in a subsequent interview on NPR.  We were sold!

Book Recommendation: Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

Where the Crawdads Sing (2018) is the story of a young girl struggling to make it on her own in the coastal marshes of North Carolina. This the debut novel by the award winning author Delia Owens. Dolores and I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it for your reading list. Click in the links to learn more about the author and books written with her husband Mark Owens.

Books by Delia Owens

"Delia Owens is the co-author of three internationally bestselling nonfiction books about her life as a wildlife scientist in Africa—Cry of the Kalahari, The Eye of the Elephant, and Secrets of the Savanna. She has won the John Burroughs Award for Nature Writing and has been published in Nature, The African Journal of Ecology, and International Wildlife, among many others. She currently lives in Idaho, where she continues her support for the people and wildlife of Zambia. Where the Crawdads Sing is her first novel." - Goodreads

Goodreads Review of Where the Crawdads Sing

"For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life–until the unthinkable happens.

Perfect for fans of Barbara Kingsolver and Karen Russell, Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps."

ViewHomes™ grew out of our passion for nature, beautiful surroundings, and peaceful environments. Starting together in an urban environment, over the years we've gravitated towards areas with smaller populations and less density. We now enjoy our lifestyle in a rural environment, but with close proximity to metropolitan areas where we appreciate all the amenities of fine restaurants, shopping, and an easy drive to an international airport.
Living in ViewHomes™ is like having “elbowroom for the soul”.

Believe it or not, I remember when Roy made that book recommendation.  I loved the title then as I do now.  Perhaps, I'll add it to my book stack, which I seem to find less time than desired to read!

I am marveling over Roy Kelley 's photo of a white cattleya and astounded to see he shot with a Canon Powershot, but then I realized he set the settings manually, and was even more intrigued. It is very hard to capture detail of white flowers in a photo.

Sounds like an intriguing book to read as well. I am reading "Becoming." Mesmerized.

I know, Roy Kelley is a rock star.

As for the book, you'd enjoy it as you too appreciate nature.  "Becoming," I loved it too. My husband and sis are also Michelle fans, but neither got into it. I devoured it - so weird how we all react differently to the same book.

Thanks for noticing the camera settings. Actually, I take my photographs on the automatic setting. The camera selects and records the settings.

"The Great Alone," I will be sure to share my thoughts when I'm done with the book, Roy Kelley - I'm certain  the Alaska theme is going to hit home, so to speak.

Carol Williams, I think it is...let me know what you think.

My guess is that you will highly recommend this book. Dolores related to the book because she lived in Alaska when her father was stationed in Kodiak.

Hi Myrl Jeffcoat For obvious reasons, when we travel I have far more time to read. Although, if there's a really good book around, I do tend to obsessively read until it's over. I really loved this one so much, I did some late nights.

Hi again Debb,
I read The Great Alone on Roy's recommendation.  It was good but got a little "dark" for me.  I'm not good with domestic abuse or any form of people being mean to another person.
