Many people prefer to move in the summer. Besides the favorable weather, the kids are at school and the home buying season is at its peak. However, moving in the summer has its own set of challenges. You need to consider a few logistical issues and take note of some summer moving tips to ensure your move is as seamless as possible.
Summer Moving Tips - Beat the Heat
Plan Ahead
Summer is the busiest time of the year for movers, so you’ll need to plan your move well in advance. Because of the high demand, the best moving companies will fill up their schedules quickly and probably won’t have to provide competitive prices. If possible, start looking for moving companies about six to eight weeks before your planned moving date. To avoid last-minute rushes, pack up your belongings a couple of days before moving and be as organized as possible.
Do Your Research
When searching for potential movers, do your due diligence. Compare several movers and what they have to offer before making your choice. You want to steer clear of any movers who want to take advantage of unsuspecting clients. Make sure you have a checklist that helps you select the most reliable mover.
Beat the Heat
Moving in the summer may be ideal, but the heat can have its own challenges as well. When possible, agree with your mover to start moving early in the morning before the heat sets in. Remember to stay hydrated, especially if you’ll be doing some strenuous activity and wear light clothing for more comfort.

When packing your belongings, bear in mind that not everything might fare well in the summer heat. The trick here is to pack belongings that are sensitive to heat (such as electronics) separately and get them inside the air-conditioned house as soon as possible.
Move on The Least Busy Days
Most people move in the beginning and end of the month or weekends so try to schedule your move for the middle of the month. Moreover, business is always slow on the weekends so that’s when you can get cheaper rates as most people are at work. Moving on the least busy days means you’ll have less of a hard time renting moving trucks, being forced to pay hiked prices or having to deal with crowded elevators.
Be Careful What You Pack
Due to the heat, you have to be cautious about what you leave in the moving truck. For instance, items such as candles can melt in the heat and damage other items. Consider taking items such as cassettes, CDs and other delicate items in your car or package them carefully as the heat can damage them.
Bottom Line
Moving is often an exciting experience, but when you add the summer heat, the move can become uncomfortable, stressful and frustrating. With these summer moving tips, don’t let the challenges of moving in summer scare you. Plan ahead, keep on top of things and make sure you start the moving process as early as the move is confirmed.
