Pondering Again At The Movies

Wondering If There Is Something About Mary

As I was reading the news about Netflix and their proposed purchase of The Egyptian Theater in Los Angeles, my mind wandered.  No surprise.  These things happen.   I have been to The Egyprian a few times for non-movie events and the historic Hollywood site is a wonderful place for fans of architecture, film and yesteryear(the theater was built in the 1920s and was home of the first showing of a motion picture according to a Reuters story I read).     The Egyptian is currently owned by the non-profit American Cinematheque and it showcases classic films and other programming.

Now back to where my pondering started. Generally, I see a film/a movie just once.  I don't need to see it multiple times.  I understand the fascination with those who do.  Just not me.  In fact although some may think I see a lot of movies, there are many I have never seen.  The upcoming Avengers movie which is breaking all kinds of pre-sale records in anticipation of its release later this month is not on my list nor are others in the series.  I will survive.  While I appreciate many things "classic" - reliving history may have its moment but it's a place where I don't find  comfort for more than a visit.

Recollection.  A Memory.  Sure.  Dwelling there for longer?  Not really.  There's much to be enjoyed and experienced today.

As for the title of this post I have never seen the film in its entirety "There's Something About Mary".  I understand it is seen as a comedy classic by some.  Again, I will survive.

What happened with that theatre? I don't even want to see half the movies out.

Good evening Michael Jacobs ,

I definitely don't see or want to see a movie multiple times. The movies out now are just not my taste..hard to find a good movie worth taking the time to go see and I love our Movie Eatery that serves wine and good food. Too bad nothing much is worth seeing!

Michael, as always we are graced with your ponderings as they offer up good fodder for further discussion. I'm not one to see movies over and over again (my husband does this ad nauseum, drives me nuts). Life is too short. I want to experience ALL OF IT.

Having never seen The Titanic (or many of those other "blockbuster" movies), I realize that I am one of the few. As you so aptly point out
"I will survive".

I too enjoy seeing a movie several times, especially if my first impression was good. I seem to get so much more from the second presentation than I did from the first 🤓 Michael Jacobs

Kathy Streib - I understand the convenience and the appeal of at-home movie viewing.  Although I have seen movies where I am in control, I still prefer the theater experience.

Endre Barath, Jr. - there's definitely not a shortage of things to do or places to see in Los Angeles as we both know.  The list grows. Once again.

James Dray - and you know what you like - that's a good thing.

Kat Palmiotti - although that is generally true, I recall(but can't remember which one) of a movie where multiple endings where shot and even the actors involved didn't know which version would show at any particular location.  Odd, huh?

Lyn Sims - the theater I mentioned in the post The Egyptian is being considered as a purchase by Netflix.

Dorie Dillard CRS GRI ABR - beverage and food service can enhance the movie-going experience but I am not sure they can make a bad movie GOOD.

Gayle Rich-Boxman Fishhawk Lake Real Estate - I have not seen The Titanic either.  Some think that is difficult to believe.

Roy Kelley - I hope you have a good weekend too.

Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS - if I like a movie once that experience is good enough for me.   Your cup runneth over with enthusiasm.  Good for you.

Michael Jacobs - What a beautiful theater! Remember when Block Busters started? Everyone I knew was talking about movie theaters would need to close down. Many did. But there remained many movie goers. Although I have never been in their shoes (divorced) people I know who are claim it is a good place to take kids when they have them for their weekend to pass away the time. Even if it did happen to me, I would want to make every second with my kids count. But that's just me.

We all have choices. Don't we. I like to see movies when they sound interesting. I don't need to have anyone go with me. And I have walked out on some movies that weren't what I was expecting. Movies.... so subjective, isn't it?

I've seen many movies multiple times. I think I saw Dirty Dancing 4 times in the theater and then at least that many times on video.

American Beauty was another one...at least 5 times...and I bought it, which is something I rarely do.

The Sting and Butch Cassidy and the Sundace Kid...each many many times. Newman and Redford...can't ask for more than that!

We no longer go out for movies...I am far more comfortable at home.

A Fish Called Wanda....OMG...I have seen that many times too. I wouldn't be able to pass it by if I find it on tv, even now. So funny!

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - the demise of movie going has outlived Blockbuster and other phenomena of the day.  Things change as does time.

Sharon Tara - you named some classics that's for sure.

Oh, now my husband would go to every movie that ever comes out AND watch it multiple times! While I do enjoy movies, I have a problem staying awake during the viewing! LOL I do enjoy plays much more but, when I do see a movie - it's ONCE - that's all I need. There is absolutely more things in life to experience than watching a movie again, Michael!

Debe Maxwell, CRS - it sounds as if you are a fan of movies but enjoy live performances better.  I admit to getting sleepy during some plays and had to resort to pinching myself during a couple of times when I attended the opera.

Yes, that's it - I do prefer live theatre...and I hear you about the opera, Michael - not my favorite. I'm a 70's girl and even though I do totally enjoy classical and jazz music, rock n' roll & Motown have to be my favorites!

Michael, have been to quite a few movies lately, some were good.   Have you seen Best of Enemies?   Or Upside?   Both were very good, IMH.
