Stand-up Paddleboarding (SUPing)
"Stand-up paddle-boarding, which requires participants to propel themselves across the water with a paddle while standing on a surfboard, has been growing in popularity around the country in recent years. And for those who like the idea of mixing a cardio workout with water but don’t want to count laps in a pool, there are many opportunities to try this sport" ~ The New York Times
SUPing is one of the fastest growing outdoor recreation activities in the world today, and that’s why it makes the list of Boyle’s Boise: 52 Things to Do and See. SUP boards are different than surfboards although stand up paddle surfing boards are almost identical. Most SUP boards used in the West are tailored to SUPing lakes and rivers. Whitewater and flatwater (like many of the waters in Boise) SUPing use different types of boards - including inflatable boards.
Similar to other major cities in the Northwest, Boise has not only embraced SUPing, the city has built quite the culture around it, with many niche, trickle-down businesses, group activities and variations of the sport developing over the last several years. A group dedicated to SUP was created by our friends at Idaho River Sports called the Idaho Paddle-Boarding & SUP Center. The group emphasizes teaching SUP boarders how to SUP through a series of intro classes, SUP fitness activities like cardio and SUP Yoga, and safety.
