Today is the deadline to file your individual tax return. If you have not already filed, there are several ways to get an extension without penalty:

  1. E-file extension for free e-file their extension form for free.
  2. By paying an estimate of their income tax due and indicate that the payment is for an extension using Direct Pay, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), or a credit or debit card. No need to file a separate extension from if you do this.
  3. By mailing a paper Form 4868 today.

I used to work across the street from San Jose City Main Post Office. Just before the end of day shift they hired extra security guards to keep those last minute madness drivers to park on private premises. Guards come with flash lights, florescent hand signs with big arrows to discourage those trying to meet the deadline. It was like a madness parade. I rarely could get off work before 8 PM. That day I find a legitimate excuse to leave before the traffic jam,

As a realtor I have learned not to contact people around this time of the year. Most realtors, clients all seem wait until last minute.  As for me I sent mine to my CPA in February and she finally got to it filed two weeks ago.  She told me her company got a lot of new customers and this year takes longer. She was relieved when I told her I promise not to send referrals anymore. Normally we are done by mid March.

Are you one of those procrastinating until last minute?

Perhaps we two are exceptions. Two years ago, a broker was refinancing his real estate office. I went there about 2 weekends before 4/15.  That 1300 sf home converted office building had at least 60 people inside waiting to have tax done. I asked the broker I thought it was a real estate office.  He saz Senor we do both. Do you know any tax preparer I can send them to?

Crazy story, of people filing the same day.  I remember when we lived in Los Angeles, the news would have a camera at the post office by the airport who picked up at midnight.  People would be lined up to drop off their tax mail.  A
