"THE EMPTIEST OF PLACES"...IS THIS WHERE YOU FIND YOURSELF??

I was prompted today, to write this after reading "Inspirations by April" here on AR. Her post "The Message--A full Life In The Emptiest Of Places", set me on my way to write this post as I deal with a very dificult time in my real estate career

There are 2000 agents hurting right now here in this bucolic, blessed part of the country because of the major change that has come to our real estate marketplace. Zillow has disconnected our listings database and we are literally out of business.

No one can figure out what to do to be able to survive in this profession. Young agents with families; older agents who still have to work, all are in need of support right now and I have to do what I know how to do: inform the population as to what is happening and what we can do to change this rocky path we are on.

After sending out a call to action, I got this response from one young man with 3 little ones, and it hit me how much this problem has affected everyone in real estate here! This was just one of many heart-rending messages I received from my fellow agents:

"This is the first time fear has been driving through an agent trying to continue a career for his family. As a young man (38 yr old) with ten years experience doing really well, this is the first time I fear big changes are coming. Big changes of uncertainty is not an easy pill to swallow. To top off the threat of our existence, we are also in a downward market. Scary times almost.!"

I am working day and night to make everyone aware of what they must do--enough of the complaining and griping about what has happened and why...We need to get the word out to all that a change has come and it is time to roll up our sleeves and put our thinking caps on--together there is strength in numbers. Management of all 6 firms here are frantically working toward fixing it...But it is a monumental problem!

If we use our highest and best intentions, we will survive and thrive! Because I believe in a higher power and a destiny derived from our individual strength, I also believe in the God-given clues around us every day; the clues to be able to do that which is required to be an independent, healthy, successful and happy person.

It is no accident that I am blessed with the last name I have--It's my biggest clue as to what I can do with my life.

People have always relied on me; I have wondered sometimes why I am asked to help in ways others are not. It seemed like a burden at times. But now I see the purpose of my life and I use the clues around me, including my last name, to guide me to where I need to be and what I need to do!

I am "Hath-a-way" and I need to share this with others...practical, self-aware and determined ways to handle our situation, no matter where in life we find ourselves! Look and you will see the clues; they are everywhere if you just stop complaining, blaming and talking about your issues. Don't gossip--look! You will find an instance, a happening right in front of you that gives you what you need to know to go forward in a better way.

Pay attention to the animal world--the birds, soaring, and flying high; the squirrels carefully packing away their seeds and nuts, saving for the future.

There is always a way: "You'll be known as those who can fix anything, restore old ruins, rebuild and renovate, make the community livable again."--What a beautiful and powerful place to be!

Hello Paula - may a 'buffet'(spelling intentional) of ideas be presented for you to 'chew on'.  I hope it's truly a feast.

Paula Hathaway, REALTOR, LBA I'm not sure I understand. Do you not have an MLS that all your listings are posted on? I know most agents wish Zillow would disappear so your lament confuses me.

Hi Michael: Thank you so much! I am sure they will come--we have a great real estate community and everybody pulls together....These times were predicted by me when I wrote posts here on AR for years about what Zillow intended to do--it will happen other places. Now just have to keep my head down until management comes up with an alternative--It will happen! Thanks for your comment, Michael!

Hi Bob: In brief, we have been taken over by Zillow--they bought out all our listings platforms and now they control this little community--all our real estate data is under their control--Take a look at my last few posts and actually my older posts as well...it's all there. We are twisting in the wind right now and I am blasting out there to the real estate community all I can...SOS! But we will be alright, I am certain we will find a way!

Hi Endre: We have MLS here but they are more for the use on Long Island, not the Hamptons--We are in a rarified environment here: Historical, fragile ecosystems, a summer resort that is farmland as well--still supplying potatoes and fresh farm produce to the rest of New York--But it is quickly dissolving as the internet takes over! Z is just a sign of what is wrong with the whole invasion of the internet in places where they cannot function as they want to--we have other websites, rental websites that I am finding about as we speak...None of these are licensed brokers--licensed to protect the homeowner as we MUST be. So it falls on the brokerage community here to protect itself and it is monumental. We are working on a fix but can't talk about it yet. Things are going to be ok, now that we understand fully what is going on--we could not do anything until all (Brokerages) came on board--Now they are and we will be fine! My throat hurts from having screamed for 10 years about Z. Now I just want to shut up and work with my fellow brokers to get it done. Thanks for your concern and your input here! PS: I loved Michaels idea of a feast--his comment was light and comforting!

Good morning Paula. So what exactly happened? You no longer have an MLS syetem? I think that would be really hard but I rememember tough days in the old days too. Good luck.

Hi Sheila: No, we had a system that was called Realnet, part of a privately owned and operated public site--that was called HREO (Hamptons Real Estate Online). These were bought out by Zillow, very quietly. They bought it and proceeded to tell the brokerage community that it was old and needed to be updated. They then closed down HREO, the only public site that offered ALL our properties to consumers-both sales and rentals right as our summer market would ordinarily start in February. They then opened OUT EAST, to replace it. That site never worked properly for the public but instead of correcting it--they shut down the Realnet (our internal system) and told us to use the back end of OUT EAST--the unworkable site that replaced both of our systems--now we have nothing that works! Perfect if you are Zillow and want to have the public use their original site only! But that was always wrong as well and has incorrect information and only operated for the agents if you paid them!!!  You can see all the dirty details in my last 2 posts published over the past month...It is a nightmare and we are currently being told by our brokers that the 6 brokerages are working on fixing it...to be continued.

It is no secret that third party interlopers have created a lot of disruption in the real estate profession.  I like your attitude about pulling together to find real solutions that will work in this new landscape!  I also like your last name, "Hath-a-Way."

Hi Myrl: Thanks--I do too. It is an amazing feeling of what is going on here--We are all  aware now of what is really happening and there is an understanding on the part of most of the agents just what paying for leads entails--it is easier, costly but easier and there is a major downside that no one should overlook. This can happen ANYWHERE and it will if no one thinks about what they are doing! Thanks for your input here!

always have to remember that emptiness does not always mean bad but can also mean solitude rather than being “solitary.”

Paula, this does sound devastating, and even now more important to blog about your listing and get the word out.   Best of luck!

Hi Joan: That is so right on the mark--it has driven me to go back to my local blogging. I had actually stepped away from here for quite a while. But the value I get from this place is too vast to ignore! Thanks for your input here, Joan!
