Poetry Month in Gaithersburg, Maryland

April is national poetry month, and Gaithersburg, which is quickly becoming the literary capital of the mid-Atlantic area, is celebrating with both a proclamation and a poetry contest, part of the 10th Annual Gaithersburg Book Festival. Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman issued the proclamation on April 15 to Lucinda Marshall, who coordinates Diverse Poetry readings at the Gaithersburg Library.

This year's Book Festival high school writing contest invited students throughout the DMV to submit original works of poetry. Ten finalists have been selected and Maryland Poet Laureate Grace Cavalieri, who will also present at the Festival, will select first, second and third place winners. A fan favorite will also be selected. View the works of the finalists and vote here.

This is a City of Gaithersburg, Maryland announcement.

Note that the Gaithersburg Book Festival will take place on Saturday, May 18, 2019

Hi Roy, it must be an enjoyable, poetic festival. We learn this month of all the wonderful Poetry organizations and publications.

Wow, wow, Roy,

These finalists are amazing.  I read three of the poems, and will come back later for the rest.  These kdis are incredibly talented, and are deep, deep thinkers.  I am impressed. A

Good morning, Roy... as much as I love to read, I have to admit that poetry was never quite my metier! But it's nice to know that Gaithersburg supports this literary art form.

Reading is a joy. I hope many people are reading more these days and taking advantage of book festivals.

Have a nice day!

Reading was an important part of my young life.  It provided an opportunity to glimpse worlds not explored and unseen.  I also enjoyed writing, but wasn't much of a poet, but I didn't know it!
