I was working on my computer right by my backyard window yesterday when I thought I saw a flash of red. I got my camera and nothing. Now I was starring hard and about three minutes later I saw it again. Now with camera in hand, I zoomed the top of a hundred foot tree in the back of my yard, about 1/2 mile away and got him. Not my best picture, but given the distance not bad.
Now that's a wood pecker..........
Hi Sheila, Good shot of that pileated woodpecker. We have lots of them here too. Love to watch them on the bird feeder. They are as large as our feeder is so they have to bend and maneuver to get the food.

Great shot! We have/had a woodpecker who we heard every morning. A couple of days ago my husband cut down the dead tree that Woody had made a lot of holes in...full of ants of course. Not sure we will hear him anymore now that his favorite insect source has been removed.
