Name calling is like clutter in a distracts from your message.

Home Stager with Room Service Home Staging

Name calling is like clutter in a distracts from your message.

Calling someone a name is like clutter in a home when you’re trying to sell it.  The distraction takes away from the message you’re trying to send. shouting

All you have to do is listen to the news...doesn’t matter which channel...and you will hear a newsreader (I don’t think they make true journalists anymore) calling someone a name as they read the story.

This isn’t about politics but about what we’ve become. I was always taught that when you call someone a name you’re showing your ignorance and just grasping into thin air rather than saying what you mean.

Besides showing your own inadequacy, you also distract from any message that you’re trying to send.

The next time you want to discuss something and you’re a bit hot under the collar...count to 10 and think about what it is you’re trying to say. If you have to be silent for those 10 or 20 seconds, so be it. Gather your thoughts and deliver your message.

Don’t grab a name out of thin air. You’re better than that!

We do have true journalists, Kathy. They write for the New York Times and the Washington Post and every other newspaper that dedicates itself to investigateive journalism and providing the facts to the public.

That is not necessarily true of those who write for websites (read: eyeballs) and television personalities. People inaccurately think advertising drives newspapers and those are two separate departments that never the twain shall meet. But I agree with you. It's ridiculous for on-air news personalities to attack each other by name calling.

Morning Kathy.

In my former profession name calling and a quick temper was the norm.  Now, while the temper is the same, name calling is no longer a part of the vocabulary.

Kathy, I cringe when I read or hear someone name calling in a professional setting. To me, it shows a lack of intelligence. There's someone in this area who is super successful and I went to a mastermind she was holding, the F word was spewing and it completely changed how I think of her.

You can work for years to build and polish your reputation, but just one bad episode or outburst can undo it all in seconds, Kathy Streib.  Very similar to building good credit/damaging your credit.  Best to stop and think about what you're going to say first ...

Great post,

And Alan May it is a pet peeve of mine. Stick to the facts, discuss the issue but don't start calling people names because you have nothing else to offer.

Liz and Bill Spear it's funny but that's one of my favorite phrases. A good friend used to say that to me in jest.

James Dray we all have called people names but it has gotten out of hand.

Amanda S. Davidson I have been known to spew 4 letter words but never in a professional setting or when I'm trying to make a serious point.

Richie Alan Naggar I agree. We have to be willing to listen with an open mind.

Gene Mundt, IL/WI Mortgage Originator - FHA/VA/Conv/Jumbo/Portfolio/Refi Counting to 10 was one of the best pieces of advice anyone has ever given.

Hi Kathy: Very timely topic...and it is time for everybody to start to "clean it up"! I think we have gone into a place where the animosity between people is at a fever pitch. There is no reason for calling names and still, there is a segment of our population who find it necessary to forget your better self and go after another in a name-calling barrage. I agree that counting to 10 can make a difference but also a little self-discipline, in general, will help--The less you use foul language the easier it is to STOP using it..The reverse is true as well--the more you curse, the more you curse!  Good post and I see you have a lot of good comments here....

Oh yes it is something you can see every day on Solical media and cable tv so called news. It is like when they can not comprehend any opinion but their own, they lose their minds and name calling soon follows

My mother used to say, "If you don't have anything nice to say about someone, don't say anything at all." I don't understand why everyone else doesn't have that same saying stapled to their brain.

I agree with you, name calling distracts from the message you are trying to convey and is a sign of a small minded individual.   As professionals we should be able to get our point across with stooping to that individual's level.
