Six recycling tips for gardeners

I love all the beautiful colors that Spring brings. It is a great time to get outdoors and enjoy the beauty and the nice weather.

Mother Nature’s blossoms are a yearly reminder that gardening is the original recycling activity. Savvy gardeners have also found other ways recycling can help their gardens grow. Consider these 6 recycling ideas:

  1. Let potted plants drink vegetable cooking water.
After you steam or boil veggies, give the cooled water to your patio plants. They’ll love it.
  2. Give feathered friends a bathtub.
Place a wide clay saucer filled with water on top of a large upside-down pot. In a neighborhood with cats, suspend the saucer in a recycled macramé hanger from a tree.
  3. Pulverize eggshells to make plants healthier.
Crushed eggshells add calcium that helps sweeten acidic soils and prevent blossom end rot.
  4. Harvest rainwater.
You can make a rain barrel from a new plastic trash can, or buy one at a garden store. Place it under your roof gutter’s downspout with a screen on top to keep out debris.
  5. Give tea or coffee leftovers to acid-loving plants.
Azaleas, camellias, gardenias, rhododendrons, and other plants that like acidic soil will enjoy a monthly sprinkling of leftover tea or coffee grounds.
  6. Don’t uproot lawn clover.
Clover pulls nitrogen from the air and fixes it in its roots. When you mow, nitrogen may be released to fertilize neighboring plants. Also, clover blossoms attract pollinating honeybees.

These are great recycling tips for gardners!  I've always loved clover but didn't realize it was beneficial to neighboring plants.
