Charles Brunier was born in Paris back in 1901. I do not have any information on Charles until 1918 when he was wounded in action while serving in Syria. He received the Croix de Guerre for saving a lieutenant’s life during WWI.
In 1923, he was convicted of murder and armed robbery sent to a penal colony off the coast of French Guiana. He escaped to Mexico when WWII started where he joined the Free French Forces serving as a fighter pilot. He saw action in the Battle of the Caribbean for two years before transferring to the infantry. He served under Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque and Charles de Gaulle who personally decorated him.
What you may not know about Charles is that after the war he was imprisoned again but released due in recognition of his service to his country. He moved into an old people’s home in 1992, where he lived until his death in 2007, he was 105 years young. If you’ve seen the movie Papillon, well that movie was based on Charles.
