We often read that a real estate agent wears soooo many hats...the tour guide, the concierge, the negotiator, etc....anyone who has been in the industry for a while easily recognizes the lengthy list of multi tasking requirements an agent has during the course of a transaction.
As agents with a niche in divorce...we have to sometimes add one more hat...the ever stylish...Sherlock Holmes special.
Things can appear to be moving along with communication going smoothly with both members of the couple....and an offer accepted by both in place....and ....POOF ...one or in rare cases....BOTH...disappear...no communication with agents...attorneys...family members...neighbors, employers...the traditional methods of finding someone ...the email, the text, the phone...all come up empty...and the calendar pages continue to flip toward the closing date.
In divorce...there are often the ever present power plays in this emotionally charged time of life. Often not well thought out in terms of consequences or the resolution of a situation...the motive may only be that one spouse is controlling the situation...nothing happens without cooperation from both parties.
Sometimes the "hide 'n seek" game is temporary...and out of nowhere the person appears as if nothing has happened. Then there are the times when there is no timely appearance...papers need signing...and there is no one to guide the pen on the required signature. In Wisconsin, we have to go to court and have a Receiver appointed to act in the best interests of the "missing" spouse. With crowded court calendars and this last minute effort...the word "EMERGENCY" is used as a session is called to get this appointment made and have the closing continue "as usual."
The errant spouse incurs further fees with the appointment confirmed and the closing done...even without their appearance...the "power play" was short lived...and expensive.
