Top 3 Reasons to Get Moving. Not homes! I mean Your Body.
Thank You re: Action Pilates!
Everyone is working so hard these days, and regardless if you are behind a computer screen or in a car, in today’s world, it’s not uncommon to sit for hours. I made a lifestyle choice to get moving, and this time I don’t mean homes, I mean my body. How do you move yours? Is it slow and painful? Or smooth and with ease?
Top 3 Reasons to Get Moving
1. BALANCE: Moving your body helps your body balance better. Welcome to re: Action Pilates
on Telegraph ave in Oakland. Re: Action Pilates is the best! Besides the convenient parking lot, the class hours range from 6 am until 5:30 p.m. classes mid week and they are open on the weekend. For a Realtor, or even a busy mom, it makes finding time to exercise even easier. But more than the above, the teachers are AMAZING!
Did I say AMAZING? In the last few months, I have taken a group class with Mae Chesney, a classically trained ballet dancer, who has taught me a lot about balance. Mae has helped me discover how to shift my weight and notice when my hips are not aligned, as well as challenged me to take my practice at home by practicing balancing on one foot while brushing my teeth with my eye closed. Have you ever tried standing on one foot with your eyes closed? It’s a good gauge on how balanced you are and believe me, it’s an ongoing practice, because every day of your life is different.
2. LENGTH: I never realized how much my spine mattered until I met the founder, educational director and teacher of 20+ years, Christy Crowley. Christy can notice the smallest detail, and is so encouraging you can surprise yourself with what you can learn in an hour class. Their website has a great chart for people trying to decide how to get started, heal an injury, or start or continue on within their practice. Or for anyone looking to take a one day workshop. The focus of the workshops change monthly.
Imagine not only thinking of your spine, and your abs, but trying to roll your spine down one vertebrae at a time until you touch your toes. Or not! Yep, it turns out during a roll down the right way matters a lot more to your spine than it does to actually touch your toes. With this extra length in my spine, I stand taller, feel stronger, and catch myself when I carry tension in my shoulders. After taking a private lesson with Christy, I had three things I could focus on to better my practice and better my life. Just like a house needs a strong foundation, our bodies do too and every day, I am amazed at the subtle changes in mine.
3. STRENGTH: On the weekend, the spring weather made me want to enjoy my yard, and after four hours of heavy gardening, twisting, bending, reaching, squatting and pruning, I thought for sure I would get tired. I never did! The next day, I did it again and another four hours went by and I couldn’t believe how strong my body had gotten from taking classes at re: Action Pilates. One hour, three times a week, and feeling the strength in my core and in my legs felt great! Not to mention my yard looks AMAZING!
Tanja London, gave us a teaser class for a workshop she had last month on the Facsia. Huh? Yeah, I didn’t even know what the facsia was until her class. It turns out she is fascinated by somatic practices and the anatomy in general. Ah, the invisible workings of the body! It reminds me when I was younger and afraid to put my head in the water when swimming in open water. Now I would hate to miss out on what’s under the waves. Curious about your muscles and how and why your body moves? Now that’s inner strength!
