Tlaquepaque - Cinco de Mayo in Sedona
What is Cinco de Mayo?
It is considered a big day of Mexican-American celebration here in the United States, especially in the southwest. It commemorates the Mexican army's 1862 victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. This is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico. Many Americans think it is Mexican Independence Day but we are sadly misinformed. (I know I thought that at one time)! Mexican Independence Day is celebrated on September 16.
Celebration and Chili Cook-off
Yesterday we celebrated Cinco de Mayo at Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village, the Art, and Soul of Sedona, as it kicked off the "South of the Border" festival season. The only catch, it was on Cuarto de Mayo (4th of May)! Admission was free and everyone enjoyed a great time!
You could hear the horns and guitars all around the village playing traditional Mexican music. The aroma of chili peppers permeated the air from the Chili Cook-off. Kids and adults enjoyed music, Spanish flamenco dances, a Folklorico dance troupe, and good old fashioned entertainment throughout the village of Tlaquepaque. As a treat for the kids, it was fun watching them wack at the piñata and enjoy a fun time face painting!
Also yesterday, it was jam-packed (even with the $15 entry fee) at the ever-popular 9th Annual Great Sedona Chili Cook-Off, a Rotary Club of Sedona charity event, located along Tlaquepaque’s main Calle de Independencia.
