27th Annual NALC Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive

The National Association of Letter Carriers' Annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive:   Saturday, May 11th, 2019

Did you know that the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is the largest single food drive in the entire nation (with more than 10,000 cities/neighborhoods participating) held annually on the second Saturday of May? Did you know that since the inception of the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive more than 1 BILLION POUNDS of food have been collected and delivered?

Did You Know That The Need For Food Is Greatest At This Time Of Year?

A fact often surprising many people is that this time of year is when need for donated food is greatest, yet it's also when donations are more infrequent. And once schools let out for the summer, many children are home without access to free and reduced breakfast and lunch programs available in Charlotte schools. More than 500,000  people in the 19 county region around Charlotte in North and South Carolina live at or below the poverty level. Over 42% of the people who are at risk of hunger in our region are children and seniors-- almost 190,000 children and 41,000+ seniors.

Since the Stamp Out Hunger food drive began in 1992, the National Association of Letter Carriers have collected 1.4+ billion pounds of nonperishable food items for families in need. It's astonishing to think that in a country as rich as ours, nationally, more than 49 million people in the nation suffer from some level of hunger, including 13+ million children and 5+ million senior citizens over the age of 60. Nationally, some 13% of American households are considered "food insecure."

How To Contribute To The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive in Charlotte:

  • Step 1
Fill a plastic bag with non-perishable food/grocery items. Some of you may have already received a bag from your postal carrier with your mail delivery.

  • Step 2
Place it by your mailbox on Saturday, May 11, 2019

  • Step 3
Your letter carrier will pick it up and deliver it to a food bank in your community.

Where Your Stamp Out Hunter Food Donations Will Go In Charlotte

In Charlotte, food  donations will go to Loaves & Fishes and Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina. Loaves & Fishes operates food pantries in Mecklenburg County for people who can’t afford groceries. Second Harvest Food Bank supplies food to pantries across the region. Volunteers are needed to help sort food at various postal stations in Charlotte -- so that is another way to help this great cause.

Most needed items include: canned meat, canned fruit, canned pastas, powdered milk, 100% fruit juice or cereal. Please do not donate expired food, open packages, or perishable food.

Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Shopping List

If donating on Saturday doesn't work for you, keep in mind that you can also donate on-line throughout the month of May to support the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

It really is that easy! So why not donate generously to the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive in Charlotte this Saturday? You'll be glad you did! My bags are packed and ready for Saturday's mail pickup? If yours aren't, you've still got 3 days to fill them up! You'll be glad you did!

A great reminder! I will have to check and see if my town participates. We have only lived here a year and I don't remember seeing anything about it last year.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel hi Alexandra... amazing to me how many people are totally oblivious despite reminders and despite postcards left in mail boxes. I wouldn't say that I see a lot of plastic bags sitting by mailboxes on my street.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® hi Sheri... we always used to get plastic bags as well. This year they put post card reminders in our mail boxes this week. No matter, my donation in plastic bags is sitting in my garage all ready for Saturday.

Nina Hollander - hunger is such a grave problem in every country, including the United States. With population explosion and the influx of refugees seeking asylum, I can't see an end to the hunger problem. And with family farms closings, I foresee a dim picture in the future. Hunger is everyone's problem.

Grant Schneider good morning, Grant... you are so right... hunger knows no season. People are very aware of it during the holidays, but there's actually more need in the summer when people become way less aware.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP hi Patricia... hunger is everyone's problem, for sure. We pay farmers not to plant... that's crazy... why not let them plant and buy their product and feed the hungry?

This is a wonderful annual event and we also have taken part in it - although, our rural location is quite different now. We can still fill a bag and drop it off - it's nuts that anyone goes hungry in our country.

And yet our federal leaders are trying to redefine poverty so that more children will go hungry. Shameful.
