The world is a busy place and absorbing all the information is hard let alone determining what is true and false. I can't help but think about how much the world has changed and is continuing to change at such a rapid rate. Today it seems to be all about changing the world. With my generation it was more about surviving the world along with life and all of it's challenges. We didn't have a lot of time to change anything. For most of us it was about overcoming poverty and helping our family. In most cases in rural Nova Scotia on the farms and the fishing villages the focus was on getting the work done. We elected people with character and integrity(Or so we hoped or thought) and trusted them with the administration of our tax dollars which was no where near the percentage of our income that it is today. Did you know that before 1917 the was no income tax ?
That is all irrelevant today as government is our biggest expense and in the opinion of many the cost of government is becoming the biggest threat to our democracy as politicians continue to promise everyone something for nothing to hang onto political power. We have bought the pitch for years because who in their right mind wouldn't want something for nothing ? Don't misunderstand me like everyone else I wanted paved roads, good health care and proper schooling for our children. Most of us want to help our seniors, our veterans, our poor, our homeless and those with disabilities. What we don't want is the waste, corruption and gross mismanagement we are witnessing today. There is no one person to single out or point the finger at. The system itself is flawed. Political parties and politicians come and go and the system seems to carry on in it's seemingly mindless wasteful way. I know it's easy for me to sit back and point out what I perceive to be the flaws. I'm also sure there are great politicians and great people working for the government. I also know my views can be skewed based on 40 years of being self employed trying to survive in business and being frustrated and impacted by government regulations, rules and policies that at times seem to make absolutely no sense. So what is a democratic government anyway ? Here's the definition of democracy .
Democracy is a system of government where the citizens exercise power by voting. In a direct democracy, the citizens as a whole form a governing body and vote directly on each issue. In a representative democracy the citizens elect representatives from among themselves.
This is what Winston Churchill said about democracy .
Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.
Here's the definition of socialism
Socialism is a range of economic and social systems characterized by social ownership of the means of production and workers' self-management, as well as the political theories and movements associated with them. Social ownership can be public, collective or cooperative ownership, or citizen ownership of equity.
Here's the definition of communism
a political theory derived from Karl Marx, advocating class war and leading to a society in which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs.
Based on these definitions it appears democracy is the only form of government where individual rights and efforts are accepted and allowed thus providing society with the illusion of freedom. By illusion I mean we are free as long as we do as we are told by government. So as a society in spite of that reality we think we are free. Our problem seems to be we can fire the politicians by voting them out but we seldom get rid of the bureaucracy they leave behind. If we continue along the current path towards socialism increased government will stifle innovation , ambition and entrepreneurship which were the characteristics of our forefathers that built our country to begin with. Just something to think about as we listen to and watch our elected and future elected politicians put their spin on how they think we should be governed. In closing be happy spring is here and here's a poem I wrote that you might find encouraging. Life Gets In The Way.
Life gets In The Way
No matter what you plan
So often you have no say
This is the plight of man
As we travel along life's road
Thinking we have a destination
We all carry a different load
We all suffer from procrastination
We all hope for a better Life
Filled with love and peace
But there's always so much strife
And troubles never cease
It can be hard to continue on
To keep the proper frame of mind
With all the burdens put upon
All the answers so hard to find
The secret is found in the moment
Not in the destination down the road
Relief from your hearts torment
The lifting of your heavy load
Embrace each day with joy and love
Leave the past behind
Let in God's love from above
For you are one of a kind
From struggle comes accomplishment
From troubles comes overcoming
From effort comes achievement
From persistence comes becoming
Becoming the person you were meant to be
Overcoming all of life's adversity
Setting your eternal soul free
To travel where it's meant to be.
