I Walked into a 1950s Television Show

Several years ago, like in the 1950s, television shows were broadcast in black and white.  The colors such as red, blue, green, and yellow were nowhere to be found.

I went to view a house the other day and I felt like I was entering one of those old time television shows.  Everything was in shades of white, black, and gray.

It actually took me a few moments for my eyes to adjust so that I could see the minute contrast of the very similar colors.  It was almost like being in a white-out condition caused by a strong blizzard, where one loses all sense of direction.

Recently, it has become very popular to paint walls a neutral gray color.  Personally, I think that gray walls clash with brown wood floors, but that was not a problem in this house, because they chose to lay gray carpet along with their gray walls.

A trend in the kitchen, which has been around for a few years, is the use of stainless steel appliances, which to me gives the room too much of an industrial appearance, and, which, in the case of this home, did little to create any color contrast, except for the black handles.

Another recent trend, where people have chosen to forgo wood colored or white cabinets, is the use of gray cabinets, which, again, was the color of choice in this home, a decision that allowed them to blend very nicely with the floor, which, you guessed it, was gray tiles.

Unfortunately, it was a gloomy day, so looking out the window only added more gray to the picture.

If it were not for the baseboards that were painted white, I would definitely have had trouble making my way through this home.

Ironically, the only way to bring color into this 1950s television show set would be to turn on a modern television.

Ron,

It is a lot easier to paint when you do not need a drop cloth, since the paint will blend right in with the carpet.

It can be really amazing to step back in time when given the chance to visit homes that have had little or no updating.  I remember several years ago, a home with 1950s turquoise appliances, etc.  Somehow, the owner had managed to keep the integrity of the age, and add a little whimsical charm to it.  I still suspected it was going to end up as a flip job by some buyer who would renovate.  But, that wasn't the case.  A retired school teacher bought it and didn't change much at all.

I inspect houses every so often that are in a time warp. Kind of cool but screaming for an update. Your gray on gray is a look for sure but not for me.
