Too Much Or Not Enough

Pondering Again Too Much Or Not Enough

Too Much Or Not Enough

It's a broad, far-reaching topic and one that can be very specific.  Not at the same time, of course.  I was thinking.  Okay, pondering.  Again.  About silence.  The sounds of silence.  And other things.  Different aspects of it.

As I look for truth or greater understanding I occasionally search for quotes by others.  I find some expected and some new-to-me thoughts.   Some of which leads me to an insight.

You can't know too much, but you can say too much.

                                                                                                 Calvin Coolidge

Speak softly and carry a big stick

                                                                                                 Theodore Roosevelt

Happy is the hearing man, unhappy is the speaking man

                                                                                                 Ralph Waldo Emerson

And this was a new quote to me and it's one that started me pondering

I think the whole world should try not talking for a day

                                                                                                    Julianna Margulies

How wonderful it would be if more people in the world would listen, rather than constant chatter, haha.

Hi Michael- sadly I wake up talking and have been known to talk in my sleep. Most of the talking I do, though, is to myself, who enjoys the conversation. That said, perhaps our ears should be larger than they are and our mouths much smaller.

Brian England - less chatter in general and more of a substantive nature might be better but it could mean the end of pondering or at least my pondering posts.

Sheila Anderson - I appreciate that you continued to try and eventually succeeded with your comment.  Glitches can be challenging.

Kathy Streib - I have some of the best conversations with myself at times.  A captive audience I guess.

Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS - it's that way sometimes for me.  There are others where the combination of both work well.  Words matter too.

Michael Jacobs - Many years ago, long before  I had a cell phone or knew anything about the Internet, I went on a silent retreat up in Door County, WI. At first, it felt uncomfortable but it didn't take long to adjust and to enjoy the silence. The hardest part for me was to sit at a dining room table with a bunch of strangers in silence without being able to ask "please, pass the salt."

Silence and discipline go together like salt and pepper. It can really spice up your life.

I have always found that people who listen and ask thoughtful questions instead of trying to think of how to combat what you said are the people you will want to be around.

That is a seriously pondering gorilla, Michael!  I also like the quote, "You can't know too much, but you can say too much."

Michael, I love the quote, "I think the whole world should try not talking for a day" ... especially the news media. Of course, I try not to watch the news much... same thing over and over and over again.

We are more matchmakers than salesmen these days Michael Jacobs ! Listening to know, to learn what the buyer has to have, will not settle for saves everyone time. And what they buy is a better fit because it works, is a match to a "T".

Hi Michael Jacobs, your post had me google YouTube for Simon and Garfunkle, the Sound of Silence. There was some connection in my mind with the Julianna Margulies quote.

Myrl Jeffcoat - yes he/she seems deep in thought.  As for the quote. definitely true in my opinion.

Rebecca Gaujot, Realtor® - yes, more wise words.  As far as the 24/7 news cycle, I think there is a part of a population that is tuning out and turning off.

Jane Chaulklin-Schott - a thought or a quote often leads me on an expedition.  The Sounds of Silence prompts many memories/ponderings.

I never used to like silence...I would have the tv on just for the sound. Now...a different story. I long for silence!
