If Only..Stop The Clock..Turn Off the Noise..

I read a post by Michael Jacobs  that took me back to my childhood. I always thought people talked too much and didn’t listen enough. I wondered how it would be if everyone stopped talking for one full day..Only if..

When I was a little child(under the age of five), we had a TV but since there were no TV programs in Turkey, we could only watch a few channels from Europe and paid boxing matches. My days were spent outdoors riding my bicycle, jumping rope, swimming, you know..activities that get children moving and communicating with others. What a concept!
A lot has changed even in Turkey, they have many channels and 24hr TV, kids behind their iPads, games, doing the same thing as our children in the US.
Perhaps old habits die, I still don’t turn the TV on during the day, I have music in the background most of the time but I must have silence. I don’t understand how people get bored when there’s so much to do outside of social media.

How did we become addicted to senseless noise? How did we get away from reading books and having meaningful conversations with each other? Lately, I’m so turned off by social media and all the garbage I see and read.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s not all bad and luckily I can scroll past the posts I don’t want to read.

I have a group of friends I meet with on the weekends, we all turn our phones off and enjoy each other’s company. Nobody has to give as points or credits to get together, we do it because we want to.
There are many networking groups out there that offer leads, meetup groups that promise all the tricks and new technology to get more business but how about just friendship groups with no expectations? What happened to those?
I rather stay in silence than attend a meeting to earn some points. How about you? Life is passing by too fast no matter what you say, it’s time to stop chasing credits in meaningless groups and enjoy life. Unfortunately, we can not turn back the clock, we each have one life to live one day at a time.

Thank you Michael for making me think about the importance of silence.

If Only..Stop The Clock..Turn Off the Noise..

Good morning Beth. I share your thinking. There are far too many nonsense opportunities today. I like a simple life too and moved to an old town that is much like it was 100 years ago. I love it.

Agreed...I remember being outside all day when I was a kid...with all my friends from the neighborhood.

My son just moved to a house in the middle of nowhere with lots of land. They are getting chickens and goats. My grandsons who usually spend time on tablets are so excited to be able to go out and play... I'm so happy for them!

We rarely turn on the TV.  We cut our cable years ago.  It happened one day when I was writing the check for Cox and it dawned on me that we did not watch 3/4 of the bundle...Both Ron and I enjoyed the great outdoors!

We both love silence, rarely even play music in our home.  Often, I will sit outside and meditate to the sound of chirping birds and hearing the tide come in to the channel!

The phone is off by 5PM, unless we are expecting a call.  A

Beth Atalay - As I read your post Sounds of Silence was playing in my head:

"I've come to talk with you again

Because a vision softly creeping
Left it's seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted
In my brain still remains
Within the sound of silence" --- Simon and Garfunkel

I just got back from a wonderful trip to TN where silence filled my soul and gave me joy!

Hi Beth Atalay ! I so agree, turn off those gadgets and BE with people - just be in the moment and listen quietly. I got off FB last year and have not missed a beat. I so enjoy getting together with friends and just talking or creating whatever.

Great post Beth Atalay my boy and I had a discussion about the impact of social media, and has it (overall) been good or bad for America. If you ask me, lots of good...but more bad  :(   Drink some delicious red wine and turn it off! lol

Hi Beth- love this!!!  I'm able to handle noise but I'm still very happy to be just with me and my thoughts. I love the times when we are with another couple and can spend the time catching up with what we've been doing rather than in a larger group where all you do is make small talk.

Neath thoughts, Beth.  I remember the fun that you describe in Turkey.  While there were toys in the house and other distractions as we got older, going out and playing was great.  So much to do and explore.  Like I've been saying of late, what the heck happened before the internet!!!??  We actually operated and worked as we do now but there wasn't the 'distraction' of email, pushed messaging, endless posts by friends -- the hundreds we agree to 'friend', tweets by millions, etc.

Life seemed precious, moreso than anyone can imagine now due to digital interference.

I prefer to have the TV off all day, until the evening. Although now I have trouble finding anything worth watching even then.

I'm totally supportive of less noise and technology devices. I spent last evening with some friends from high school and it was very enjoyable. Lots of talking and laughing. No social media. :-)

Beth, silence is priceless and I admit I wish I had more of it. We don't watch much TV and don't have cable but, the phone is constantly going with alerts. Getting together with friends and putting it away for a couple of hours is something I need to do more of. You are so balanced, I admire that about you.

My wife still kids me about the time I told her it "hurt to talk" anymore that day.  After talking all day to clients, I'm more than happy to be quiet, Beth Atalay.  I can relate ...
