"Education is what remains after what one has forgotten

what one has learned in school."

---Albert Einstein

Cars, Trucks, Motorcycles, Bicycles, Scooters, Etc.

Remember, there are new drivers on the roads. Texting and driving are not allowed in TX and in most states in the United States but are you sure kids will remember? Beware of baby drivers old enough to drive.

Running, Playing, Not Looking Where You're Going

Remember, kids have short attention spans. No matter how skilled and physically fit a child appears to be, they are still learning to practice independence. Watch out for kids.

Entertainment vs Boredom

Remember, pre-teens and teens have hormones. They still need discipline, structure, and rules to follow. Plus, all kids, young adults, and people of all ages have consequences for their actions.

Internet Safety & Chat Rooms

Remember, when it comes to children, parents need to trust and vice versa. Today's world is different than when you went to school or your parents. Set up emergency plans and practice safety. Do your kids know who to call in case of an emergency? Cyber Security is for everyone.

"There are two educations. One should teach us how to make a living and the other how to live." ---John Adams

Remember, when it comes to jobs, volunteering, and earning money, children need opportunities to demonstrate responsibility. Are there neighborhood opportunities for children to earn some money like cutting grass, babysitting, pet sitting, doing chores? Volunteering without pay builds character.

Remember

Remember, will you remember to be patient now that many kids are already out of school and others will be out shortly? Remember, many children still go to school during summer vacation, there are sports, swimming, vacations, music, dance, and other activities for children of all ages. Be mindful. Schools are out for summer. Watch out for kids.

Just heard on the radio that the University of Hawaii's last day is today! Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP  For us, that means less traffic since 25,000 students will not all be driving.  There will still be some for summer but the freeways will be less congested.

Hello Patricia - the Einstein quote is certainly appropriate as school releases for summer.  Be aware.  Stay alert. Year-round and especially as Summer recess is here.

I've often wondered if we have really "progressed" from that time, Patricia.  After all these years, I still remember my first day at school.  Mrs. Crosby (our kindergarten teacher), walked us around the classroom.  She showed us where the clay was.  Ditto for books, painting easels sand other learning tools.  Now fast forward to today's world.  A couple days ago, I listened to a teacher describe how on the first day of school she instructs students on how to handle an active shooter situation!

Yes, we all have to be careful and watch out for kids. I think having jobs for school children to do in the summer is a great idea - keeping them busy in a productive way.

I like both quotes! Life can teach us a lot of lessons.

Myrl Jeffcoat - I can't help but wonder if brick and mortar school buildings will cease to exist at some point in time and education will become on-line video simulcast with teachers having the ability to see what each student is doing inside their homes. Of course, classes would need to be smaller or each teacher assigned several class monitors. Gosh, it's another world today and the school has changed so much. Another thing that struck me was the photos of the Presidents hanging up in the classrooms. Back then, we weren't taught who was a bad or good president. We just celebrated Washington's birthday and Lincolns! I wonder what kids are being told about Presidents past and present today and how much they know. Of course, it's on the news constantly and geseze, what do kids think about Presidents between the era of Kennedy through today?

My Kindergarten class was pretty cool. We had one enormous space for our learning. Each kid was assigned a table with about six kids per table. In the middle of the table were things we needed and were required to share, such as paste, crayons, scissors, and sparkles. The other large room was our indoor playground. It had swings, a slide, playhouse, a toy kitchen, and lots of toys! We also had 2 cloakrooms. One for boys; the other for girls to hang up our coats. Boys marched in and out their own door and us girls had an exit leading to the girl's bathroom or the front door.

Oh, the memories - both my own and my boys' school days! At times, I'm glad those days are behind us but, other days, I miss the 'chaos' and kids running in and out of my house, Patricia!

Funny but, when school is out here, our traffic is SO much nicer!

Hi Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI, MRP - Very timely post to get people thinking about the children and teens who will be in a different environment during summer. We need to be cognizant of that.

I love the John Adams quote. Sometimes I think some parents forget that they are still the number one teacher for their children.

Our Sedona schools are getting out on May 23rd which is later than normal. I have not heard why the change. ??

As for texting... YIKES! Sedona straddles 2 counties and one county had no texting and the other county didn't have any laws.  Sedona had to adopt a no texting law. Finally, Arizona just went to a no texting state. But you are right. This is one of the hardest things to hold drivers accountable, let alone inexperienced drivers.

Kat Palmiotti - It is so important for mothers and fathers to have a trusting neighbor to whom their children are welcomed and can put them to work in some small and productive way. I am a firm believer good neighbors are a necessity for families with young children. Kids need to know how to interact with adults and know the difference between who is good and can be trusted. It is an important life lesson to start building trusting relationships and to keep kids out of range of the bad guys.

Thanks, Kat. Have a wonderful day!

Debe Maxwell, CRS - My mother didn't allow my friends to come to the house. When I became a mother and stayed home with my kids, I allowed my door to be open for any kid who needed the bathroom, something to eat, or even lay down for a little cat nap on the floor if they wanted. I would bring them sleeping bags and pillows and always let them visit anytime they needed. I was one of the few stay-at-home moms. They were ALL my children!

I like that I don't have to contend with School Buses or if there are a few, they don't bother me.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® - Texting is a HUGE problem! TX implemented no texting while driving a couple of years ago but I still see drivers texting and talking. It really bugs me a lot! They are such a distraction and most people who are doing that while driving doesn't even realize they are driving like drunk drivers, swerving and going through stop signs, lights, etc. Even worse is when I get their attention they give me the look like what's wrong with you???  I wish I could be a Ticket Buster and get them off the roads!

Sheri, I have noticed drivers are looking younger and shorter behind the wheel, have you noticed that too? I don't want to admit I'm getting older! I remember how hard it was to get a driver's license when I was a new driver. It was rare for any kid to pass the first time. Now, it seems like it's an entitlement. Get your license on the first attempt. Get an expensive vehicle that cost more than my first house! I get irritated when I hear about student debt. It's not debt for student loans, but for trucks, vehicles, technology, and all the things kids must have today. There seem to be no limits to what it costs.

When there are multiple counties with different texting rules it makes it very difficult for everyone! Here in TX, they made it a State Law but I don't think enough people listen. Be safe, Sheri! It's hard on me too.

With school out, there are many challenges and it impacts everyone, not just mothers and fathers.

Roy Kelley - I ordered Highlights and Weekly Reader magazines for my kids. Plus, I enrolled them in book clubs and took them to the Library too. They became avid readers and were smarter than the average kid after summer vacation. I have no regrets. Just pride!

Awe! Thank you for the flowers! The pink tulips are absolutely lovely!!!
