Pondering Dr Ruth

Lessons Learned Courtesy Of Dr. Ruth

Recently I saw the documentary Ask Dr. Ruth.  You likely know Dr. Ruth Westheimer.  She is the diminutive German-born woman who made a name for herself in part as an expert on late night television and other media outlets.   As the little woman with the distinctivevoice who rolls her "Rs" with the best of them, she speaks of sex in clinical terms in a straight-forward manner.

Her story is about much more than that.  And it's pretty incredible.  From the start too.  Her earliest years while others the same age might not have a care in the world her life changed.  The world was changing.  She was a part of that change.  Others obviously experienced it as well.  Some survived but we know of those who didn't.

That might have been a story in itself but there's really more to tell.  We learn of poignant times.  Happy occasions.  Hilarious moments.  Serious subjects too.

In short(no pun intended) it's a life well-lived.  It's not just about sex.  Things in life are rarely about just this or simply that.  And there's a lesson to be learned from Dr Ruth too.  I enjoyed this documentary and the lessons we can learn in many unexpected places.   From Dr. Ruth and from others.  And there are lessons to be learned from this documentary.

Brian England - I can't recall discussing Dr. Ruth with Mr. M.  Of course, I am not sure who would be providing the lessons and/or presenting the lectures.  Now try to get that thought out of your mind.  If you can.

The things that make you quirky or unusual usually can benefit you somehow also add a little something to. I was labeled learning disabled at some point and yet I made it work with multiple degrees and certifications. Life is funny that way.

To that point Michael, Those quirks can grab attention and both good and bad ways and it’s up to us to know ourselves and how we best can utilize it.

Well, I had no idea about the good doctor!  She is certainly remarkable and had childhood memories that obviously had little to do with her advice... or maybe they did??

Laura Cerrano - quirks can often "make" the person.  And memorable for the right reason is a good thing.

John Henry - it's a part of the 'entire picture' I think.

Sharon Tara - if not available now, I am sure it will show up on one of the streaming services soon since the documentary had some Hulu affiliation.

Hello Jane Chaulklin-Schott - when I clicked on the link the movie trailer showed up along with other Westheimer vidoes but the documentary was featured for me.  Thank you for stopping by.  I appreciate it.

Michael Jacobs - Do I remember Dr. Ruth? Yes, I say with a blush, hoping at that time in my life I wasn't going to die and go to hell because she was outrageously funny and provided more education to me than I ever learned elsewhere. And, I just couldn't pull myself away ( and so I make the sign of the cross)...

I clicked the link and found that short little intro on her life more interesting today than I could imagine. Her voice is unique. You know it's her immediately! I didn't realize she was so short! But she was powerful and a change maker about sex when others her age weren't talking about it. I hope I get to see the entire documentary!

I never heard anything about her background. But it doesn't surprise me. Growing up in Chicago, there were many Jewish refugees. Ironically, a few years ago, my oldest sister's husband died. They got married at 18. A few months ago, we were talking about my brother-in-law and I asked her, where was he born?  Her answer was shocking! My brother-in-law was born in a Concentration Camp. His parents were displaced and had nowhere to go, so they along with many others who survived stayed in the Concentration Camp where his parents conceived him and he was born. You know Michael, there were many secrets at that time and stories, people didn't talk about. I was shocked to learn about my brother-in-law. In thinking about his father, I was always impressed how determined he was to make the best of every situation and he wasn't ashamed to clean the grocery store at the corner where I lived like a janitor. He always wore a smile and talked kindly to everyone. He was also very grateful for every day he had on earth. He was so unlike my brother-in-law whose father sacrificed a lot to give his sons everything he never had in life.

Those Jewish Refugees like Dr. Ruth and my brother-in-law's father were pretty amazing, bold, not ashamed of anything, and made do with what they had always with gladness and gratitude - always giving! I wish I had known that about my sister's father-in-law when he was alive. But again, it's something we never talked about and nor did my own sister or brother-in-law.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - if you have the opportunity to see the documentary Ask Dr Ruth your unique perspective will likely enhance your viewing experience.  Dr Ruth is quite forthcoming about her life as you might imagine. I appreciate your thoughtful comment.
