James Francis was born in Cleveland, Ohio back in 1920. He was attending Oberlin College before receiving an appointment to the United States Naval Academy. He graduated in 1942, completing the Academy in three years due to an accelerated wartime curriculum.
He was assigned to the Naval Submarine School in New London.
He served on the USS Jack for three years. For his service, he was awarded two Silver Stars and two Bronze Star Medals. After the war, he served at the Submarine School as an instructor. In 1952, he was assigned as the executive officer aboard the USS Harder. Later he became the commanding officer of the USS Trigger.
Later on, he was given command of the USS Skate, the third nuclear powered submarine. He rose through the ranks to vice admiral given the command as superintendent of the United States Naval Academy in 1968, he retired in 1973. Thirty-one years he served this Republic.
What you may not know about James Francis Calvert is that while in command of the USS Skate, it was the first submarine to surface at the North Pole. That event happened on March 17th, 1959.
