Hales Çambel was born in Berlin, German Empire back in 1916 to Hasan and Remziye. She graduated from the Arnavutkoy American High School for girls. She completed her education in archaeology at Sorbonne University in Paris. In 1944, she received her doctorate. For two years she was a visiting scholar at the university of Saarbrucken in Germany.
In 1960, she was appointed professor where she founded the Institute of Prehistory. In 2004, she received the Prince Claus Award in the Netherlands. She also founded a chair of Prehistoric archaeology at Istanbul University. She was married to Nail for 70 years before his passing in 2008. Sadly, she died in 2014, she was only 97.
What you may not know is that Hales was the first Muslim woman to compete in the 1936 Summer Olympic Games. She was invite by a female German official to meet Adolf Hitler, she refused it on political grounds.
