I was working on my monthly newsletter and came upon the article I saved about our bank robbery. That's right, there was a bank robbery right here in Paradise. The Kukui Grove Shopping Center branch of First Hawaiian bank was robbed in broad daylight on Friday May 23rd. According to the May 24th Garden Island newspaper, "the man - approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall and in his 40s - approached a teller and demanded money, according to officials. He left the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash. Mall security and police arrived within 15 minutes of the incident."
I guess he fled somewhere but really, where can one run to on an Island? Into the taro fields? What is really interesting about this robber is how he was caught. A few days later, "Bank robbery suspect Mark Chambers hitchhiked to the police station Tuesday before turning himself in, according to police and the man who says he picked him up."
Bill "Eichenberger, a retired military helicopter pilot, picked up Chambers at roughly 8:30 PM and asked where he was headed. A series of cordial questions revealed that Chambers was also going to Lihue, specifically to the police station to turn himself in for the bank robbery at Kukui Grove Center."
"At first I thouhgt he was pulling my leg, but he was telling me about his heroin addiction, about his alcohol and drug problems, and that he needed help. I told him was doing the right thing, said Eichenberger."
Only on Kauai do our suspects hide in taro fields and hitchhike to the police department. Chambers has previously served time at the Federal Correctional Institution in Sheridan, Oregon, a medium security facility, for another Kauai bank robbery in 1997.
