Thoughts On Honor, Sacrifice, And Freedom For Memorial Day Weekend

My thanks to Nina Hollander for this post and the video. For too many, Memorial Day weekend is just a celeberation of the beginning of the summer season; an exta day off work; and the opportunity to escape to lakes or mountains for camping.  I fear that many give no thought to the many who sacrificed their lives to give them the freedom to enjoy this weekend.

Honor, Sacrifice, Freedom, Never Forgetting...

As we begin to look towards the Memorial Day Weekend holiday, let's never forget that we enjoy our many freedoms in the United States of America because there have been so many throughout our history who sacrificed their all to protect our freedom.

As I do each year, I've posted my favorite Memorial Day Tribute video, which never fails to move me. It is all the more powerful because it is silent except for the music. The message is simple and powerful: Honor, Sacrifice, Freedom Is Not Free, and We Should Never Forget. As Elie Wiesel said: "Without memory, there is no culture. Without memory there would be no civilization, no future."

In the spirit of remembering why we observe Memorial Day and why we can enjoy this long weekend holiday in the first place, please take a minute to watch this video to remember and honor those who gave their lives for our great country, as well as to never forget that freedom is not free and has been paid for with the blood of the heroes who were willing to pay the ulitimate price with their lives for our nation and our freedom.

"It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived."

       George S. Patton

"Above all, we must realize that no arsenal or no weapon in the arsenals of the world is so formidable as the will and moral courage of free men and women."

Ronald Reagan, First Inaugural Address, January 20, 1981

"A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself."

          Joseph Campbell

"And they who for their country die shall fill an honored grave, for glory lights the soldier's tomb, and beauty weeps the brave."

Joseph Rodman Drake

"Our flag does not fly because the wind moves it. It flies with the last breath of each soldier who died protecting it."

Let us observe this Memorial Day Weekend in memory of many and in honor of all. Thank you to all who have sacrificed for our freedom. We owe each who has sacrificed a debt that can never truly be repaid. Never forgetting that sacrifice is but a small down payment on that debt.

Thanks Barbara Todaro - I wish more people would stop to think about this and to remember not just those who died, but those who came back from war and still suffer from it decades later.

Kat Palmiotti I think it's a sentiment that needs to be shared - all year long.
