4 Reasons to travel with your kids

Traveling with children may seem too intimidating to attempt, but while it is challenging, it also provides many benefits. Here are four reasons why traveling is good for the kids in your family.

  • Travel offers hands-on learning experiences. What better way for your children to learn about nature, geography, architecture, and history than to actually see and touch it for themselves? Traveling exposes kids to experiences that a textbook can't teach.
  • Travel provides a greater understanding of the world. Engaging with individuals in other cultures can teach children an appreciation for diversity while also reinforcing the similarities among all people. Travel will help kids think beyond themselves and their own daily lives.
  • Travel teaches patience and adaptability. While uncomfortable, long waits and shifting plans help kids practice patience and learn how to think creatively to occupy their time.
  • Travel deepens your family bond. Shared experiences through travel often become cherished memories that last a lifetime.

Give your home a safety checkup

June is National Safety Month, which means now is a great time to review and update the safety measures in your home. Here are a few priority items to tackle first.

  • If you have kids or grandkids, child-proofing your home is essential. Make sure all cleaning products and other hazardous materials are locked up and out of reach. Use furniture anchors to secure any household furnishings or large electronics that could be pulled over by a climbing child.
  • Avoid accidental overdoses by ensuring all current medications are labeled correctly and stored in a safe location. Properly dispose of medications that are expired or no longer needed.
  • Invest in a home security camera, motion sensor lights, and a smart lock and doorbell to help keep your property secure.
  • If you have an older family member living with you, look for ways to reduce the risk of falls. Consider installing a chair lift on the stairs and grab bars in the bathrooms. Make sure all handrails are secure and hallways and outdoor walkways are well-lit.
  • Test your home for radon and, if necessary, hire a mitigation professional.
  • If you have a fireplace, have the chimney and flue cleaned and inspected to reduce the risk of a house fire.
  • Create or restock an emergency kit. Be sure to include bottled water, nonperishable food, blankets, a first-aid kit, a flashlight with extra batteries, a portable charging bank for your phone, and a change of clothes for each member of the family.
  • Hire a professional to check your older appliances to ensure there are no leaks that could allow harmful gases to enter your home.
  • Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and make sure you change the batteries once per year.
