Opinion Poll: What is a Blogger?

By
Real Estate Agent with Downing-Frye Realty, Bonita Springs, FL 676419

Help me out with basic question, because I have apparently missed something, somewhere along the line. More than a few of the "commenters" on a column I write in the local paper keep referring to themselves as bloggers. My opinion is that they are COMMENTING on the online version of the paper. That does not make them a blogger, it makes them a commenter. If they were bloggers I thought that they would be WRITING the story that people are commenting on.

Your opinion and contribution to the poll is appreciated:

Thank you all for contributing.  I did a yes, no, maybe the last time I had a poll and it bothered me so I did it more black and white this time.  I wanted a more definitive answer.

For the "maybe" people I wonder if there is a particular level of contribution a commentor has to have to be able to considered a blogger.  If they are just a name caller, fire starter or tossing molentov cocktails onto the blogs of others are they still bloggers or are they just village idiots?  Are spammers still bloggers.  Technically they're adding a comment to a blog...

Herb what makes you think people ruffle my feathers ;)

Blog this Baby!  You can't be a jogger if you don't jog (active).  Although I guess most 'commenters' on AR are bloggers too!  I agree that bloggers are writers.

Is a commenter who simply asks a question for clarification a blogger?

I think you only qualify as a blogger if you write a blog. If you comment you are a commentor?!? Good grief.

Fun post.

Guess I don't see how someone who comments only is a blogger. Blog commenter perhaps. If someone reads someone's novel and then writes a letter to comment are they then a novelist? Someone who comments on a movie is a critic not the movie director.

Chris - this is a good question but in my eyes a clear cut answer. Those who create the blog are bloggers and those who add to it are commentors unless they too have a blog then they are blogger commentors. Are we confused enough yet?

An agent who was trying to discourage blogging (by anyone in our office, or women in our office particlularly) because it is unsafe  told me he "blogs" ... but in trying to find out where he "blogs"  I came to believe he was referring  to reading blogs and commenting... or being part of an online community... that included blogs...

Chris, you have to write to be a blogger, wondering why you didn't have in the poll both? Interesting that the ones commenting on your online newspaper are calling themselves that.

I agree we need to write to classify ourselves as Bloggers.  Now the next question is Blogger a word? I know the spell checker doesn't think so.

I'm with Susie  . . . . .  . .

"You can't be a jogger if you don't jog"

and

You can't be a rider if you don't ride . . . . and

You can't be a skater if you don't skate (although standing on the sidelines as a Mom ought to count for someting <grin>)

and

You can't be a golfer if you don't golf . . . . . but most important . . . .

You can't be a realtor  if you don't sell real estate  (ok sorry all, I know the little R belongs in there but I don't know how to do it)

Sorry getting punchy and this newbie is trying keep a sense of humor!  LOL

Susie has it.... the others are just wanna-be-bloggers.

Then again, I play golf... and I'm no golfer... at least that's why my buddies say. :)

I'm sure it's been said, but you can't be a writer if you don't write.  Seems pretty obvious what a blogger is.

You were quick to read. I edidted that comment removing that remark only a few moments after written. Did so cause I re-read your post. Mis-interpreted the first read through.

Nice to see you posting regularly again.

Chris,

In my opinion, a blogger is a writter.  A blogger reads what other bloggers write simply as a form of networking, friendship, curiosity and of course communication.  If a blogger never read another person's blog, it wouldn't matter in the least because that blogger could still be an effective writer.  Therefore, a blogger is a writer.  All the rest is secondary.
