In Waterbury CT Not All Memorial Day Ceremonies Were to Honor the Fallen

On this Memorial Day, as we honor the brave men and women that gave their lives to protect our freedom we also celebrated in Waterbury CT the unselfish feats of Waterbury natives as well.

This past week, the Waterbury CT Veterans Memorial Committee held their annual 'Support Our Troops' event that honored men and women that had proudly served our country to protect our freedoms.  The honors were bestowed on veterans of military conflicts from World War II to the current Middle East struggles.

Five veterans of World War II were also honored as honorary Mayors of the Day in Waterbury CT, and one of them was my father, Joseph Silva, who proudly served in the Navy.

All the honorees spoke humbly of the time they served and all confirmed that it was a choice that they made without question and with pride.

Later in the day a dinner was held to honor all that were singled out that day. The capacity crowd of 620 people again raised their hearts with pride at our Waterbury CT veterans.

Not all Memorial Day events are for the fallen, and the opportunity to honor those that fought bravely and were alive to receive the acknowledgements of their friends and neighbors was equally important.

Good morning, Ed... no doubt today is a day to honor the fallen... but it's also a good time to honor those who came back and who can help us remember the fallen.
