When Billy Ray Cyrus came on the scene with Achy Breaky Heart in 1992, he caused a lot of controversy. I have no idea why some were so opposed to him and his song, because it was one of my favorite foot stomping songs of all time.
I wasn’t alone. The song was the first country single to be certified platinum since 1983. And yet, there were those who thought it was the worst song of all time.
Achy Breaky Heart was the top selling song on the album Some Gave All. Some also called this the worst album of all time. Although 3 other songs from that album did soar to the top of the charts, the title song did not.
WHY? Perhaps because it was just too true – too serious – too important.
On this Memorial Day, I think it’s a good time to take another listen to that title song:

In fact, I think the message in this song is one we should all remember – every day.
My husband and my friends served during the Viet Nam era. Those who made it home after living through the terror of that war still carry the scars – physical and emotional. Some hide it better than others. Some only talk about it when they’re with other Veterans.
And of course we know that some simply could not cope – many of them are among our homeless.
To say thank you to veterans seems so insufficient, but my undying gratitude and respect are all I have to offer.
So – to all of you veterans, thank you. Some of us do not forget.
