Some gave all, all gave some...

When Billy Ray Cyrus came on the scene with Achy Breaky Heart in 1992, he caused a lot of controversy. I have no idea why some were so opposed to him and his song, because it was one of my favorite foot stomping songs of all time.

I wasn’t alone. The song was the first country single to be certified platinum since 1983. And yet, there were those who thought it was the worst song of all time.

Achy Breaky Heart was the top selling song on the album Some Gave All. Some also called this the worst album of all time. Although 3 other songs from that album did soar to the top of the charts, the title song did not.

WHY? Perhaps because it was just too true – too serious – too important.

On this Memorial Day, I think it’s a good time to take another listen to that title song:

Some Gave All: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydWhRObVxrM

In fact, I think the message in this song is one we should all remember – every day.

My husband and my friends served during the Viet Nam era. Those who made it home after living through the terror of that war still carry the scars – physical and emotional. Some hide it better than others. Some only talk about it when they’re with other Veterans.

And of course we know that some simply could not cope – many of them are among our homeless.

To say thank you to veterans seems so insufficient, but my undying gratitude and respect are all I have to offer.

So – to all of you veterans, thank you. Some of us do not forget.

Yes Will Hamm - it is a special day - a day to honor those who fought to give us the liberty to have a cook out.

Good morning Marte - It is good that you posted this song but we must not forget those in our midst who did not come back along with those who didn't come back at all.

Grant Schneider I know a lot of Viet Nam Vets - many of those who came back left part of themselves there and brought things with them that no one needs. For some it's memories that won't let go -for others it's injuries that can't heal, and even pieces of shrapnel.

That darned song has been playing itself in my head ever since I wrote this post.

I am from the Vietnam War era also.  I had a number of friends who served.  One especially good friend, Grant Highsmith, lost his life there!

Myrl Jeffcoat I didn't know anyone who lost his life there, but I know a few who came back too messed up to live a good life once they got home.

Marte Cliff - I definitely know of Billy Ray Cyrus but was oblivious to the song "Achy Breaky Heart." I found it on YouTube and watched it and it was so mild compared to what his daughter does. I guess I was on the long road to recovery in 1992 after the years prior when my husband (who served in Vietnam) passed away. It took a very long time for me to heal and reach acceptance. I also had a second cousin who didn't come back. All the cousins and second cousins got together frequently so that time period stayed fresh in my mind for a long, long time.

I also watched the video you provided for Some Gave All. It gave me chills to see those choppers. My husband was a machine gunner on a Bell Huey and all I have are the flag I received, his metals, uniform, and photos he sent me from over there. I regret I burned all his letters.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP Yes, I've heard that Miley Cyrus is a bit racy. I've never listened to her music, however.

One of my favorite memories is the night my son and I went dancing at a cowboy bar and they played Achy Breaky a couple of times - such fun to dance to!

The Some Gave All video gave me chills as well. Those of us who were safe at home have no idea what those boys went through...
