First-time home buyers are in a unique situation... Basically, you don't really know what you're doing. So now we bring you What I Wish I Had Known - Tips From Someone Who's Been There - tidbits from a friend of EMA Real Estate who would like to share what she wishes she had known. What I Wish I Had Known #2: You Really Can't Judge a Book By Its Cover
When we went out looking at houses, we found so many that we thought we LOVED! But when you look at houses for your first buy, you don't know what you're looking at. I mean, a house is a house, right?
What I wish I had known was that there are things about a house you NEED to know to look for! Now, I'm not talking about dirt under the carpets or gutters that need a good cleaning (although you really should check for those things as well). I'm talking about things like mold, termites, bed bugs, and gas leaks. Doesn't just hearing those words make your skin crawl and your heart beat a tiny bit faster?
Do yourself a favor... Have your real estate agent (you have one now, right??) refer you to a reputable house inspector. Let that person do a thorough once over on the house of your dreams. That way, you'll know there are other critters planning to live with you before you move in.
