Why Own A Home? It's Personal

Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Elite 513.520.5305 www.LizTour.com SAL.2002007747

sail awayWhy own a home instead of renting?

Now you'll often hear "It's the biggest investment you'll ever make!".

And that's probably a true statement, but our personal view is thinking that buying a home is going to guarantee a major jackpot at the end of your ownership is a roll of the dice.  Buy at the top of a bubble and you're going to get spanked, HARD.

So why buy a home?  The reasons will vary from person to person.

For us, the reason why is a series of words.

Liz and I married just a handful of days after I graduated from Annapolis.  The first six years of our marriage involved a lot of nomadic life and no realistic opportunity to be a home owner.  5 different homes in 6 years, none of them ours.

After my Navy days we headed to Cincinnati to start my career as an engineer.  Initially we rented.  We wanted some time to get to know the area, get my job history established and figure out the whats and the whys.

After a year we were ready to buy.  Let's just say that the kids next door "helped" us know it was time to make the big move.  We were tired of not having control or choice.  Not being able to paint a wall a color we wanted.  Having to be particular about how many pets we could have, and being charged extra to have them.  Working night shift and having the door just outside the bedroom slamming all day long.  It was time to have some control.

It didn't take long for us to find a place that would become our home.  A modest ranch with 2.5 acres of woods.  No one within sight of our home, and still only a 20 minute commute to work.

Over the last years we've exercised our choice that comes with home ownership.  Besides the framework of the home, poured foundation and the drywall, there's almost nothing that is the same as when we bought our home.  We've gutted and remodeled everything.

And there's no one to tell us how many pets we can have.

No one that dictates how we decorate.

This home has provided us stability.

The landlord can't raise the rent, decide to sell the home and tell us to move, or make a false claim against the security deposit.

This home is ours (well other than the mortgage lien!).

While it's not a big profit center for us, it's provided something we didn't have the first 6 years.  A home to call ours.

Now years later we help people buy and sell homes, for whatever personal reasons drive them.  It's a privilege to help guide those choices.  Call us at 513-520-5305 if you need someone that's been there and done that to help!

Oh, I love your story, Bill! After being raised in a military family and never being in one spot more than 1-2 years, I found that in adulthood, I have enjoyed moving - within the same city!

Hearing that you landed in one spot and haven't moved once (within Warren County) is so what I dreamed of as a military brat! What made me buy & sell 7 homes in 40 years within the same city? It's is beyond me!! LOL

The freedom to do what you want and to bulid equity for retirement is so important for Ray & me as well.

Thanks for your entry, Bill!

BTW, I haven't received the call...imagine that!

As one whose roots go deep into this North Idaho soil, I sometimes think it would be fun to pick up stakes and move around. Then I think... nah.

These are all great reasons for home ownership - having the control to be able to paint, remodel, upgrade, landscape, have pets and bees and flowers and ...  all of it!

Great story! And who loves moving anyhow! I remember those days of renting and moving at the end of every lease. What a pain! Kudos to you for figuring it out so many years ago!

Home ownership is the simplest way to own your own bank. Depending on your wisdom, your bank could be replicated over and over again, however, if that doesn't occur, your bank will provide you the funds to reinvest or simply enjoy your lifestyle.

Since marrying my husband in 1989, we rented the apartment he was living in when I met him. After 18 months of that, we moved in with my parents for 18 months to save money to buy our first home. Since that starter home, we've built and lived in 2 brand new houses. As we contemplate our next move sometime in the next 3 years, we have a decision to make about renting vs buying, since we are probably going to be in a new state. So, the input of other agents is quite interesting to see the different perspectives.
