Do you clean your carpets professionally?

Home Builder with The Flooring Girl

Did you know that the carpet companies recommend that you steam your carpets every 12-18 months?  12 months for heavy traffic areas such as family rooms, hallways, etc and 18 months for low traffic areas such as bedrooms?

And, if you don't the warranty on the carpet is voided.

One could argue that they are looking for ways to reduce claims on carpets, but I can tell you that very few people ask put in claims after the first 30 days.

Now, I think we all know that vacuuming and steam cleaning your carpets is a good thing to do.  It makes the carpet and the whole room cleaner - good for the carpet and the air.  The also look and feel nicer.

But, did you also know that both of these activities also prolong the life of your carpet?  Well it does.

This is because the small dirt and dust fibers wear down the carpet, especially as we walk on the carpet.  You see they are almost like tiny glass fibers and they get pushed downwards and start to wear away the fibers as we (or our pets) walk on the carpet, or chairs roll over them.

So it's well worth it to steam clean your carpets periodically.

And of course accidents happen - whether it's a spill or pet accident.

You don't have to call a professional in to steam clean your floors if you don't want to. You can also do this yourself if you buy a carpet steam cleaner

If you do this, you can save yourself money in the long run, and take care of those inevitable accidents are your own convenience.

Either way, it's a good thing to get those carpets steam cleaned.  It's good for you and your family and good for your carpet, too.

Which do you prefer?  Professional carpet cleaning or having your own personal steam cleaner?

Hello Debbie - there are some things I knew but enough new information that has me "bookmarking" this post.

Carol Williams - I think this post is feature-worthy but if it doesn't receive a gold star prior to your publication of SCS Second Chance Saturday I think it deserves a spot there.

Hi Debbie,
I'm seriously interested in replacing the flooring in my home and interested in what you think about the best option for wood flooring, bearing in mind I have champagne taste on a beer budget.  LOL

I guess I need to know what questions to ask the local flooring people as I do my shopping.

Hello Debbie,  What if you steam clean them yourself?  I never have the time so have a professional company come out ones a year.

I do indeed have my carpets cleaned every 15-20 months professionally.

Now if i did it it wouldn't be professional!  But I prefer dry cleaning to steam cleaning.  And it's dry quick quick.

We have mostly hardwoods and tile, but in the bedrooms we have carpet. And yes, we do have them professionally cleaned once a year. D

Where I live, just finding a professional carpet cleaner is a chore. My old carpet shampooer is OK, but not great, so I appreciate your recommendation on buying a good replacement.

One question: Why do they call them steam cleaners when there's no steam?

Great post!  I typically tell my tenants to professional clean annually.  Removing shoes is a great dirt deterent but I can't always be there to remind them!
