d-day

What many may know of D-Day is through having seen Saving Private Ryan, which is an excellent film. Boomers, like myself, had parents and uncles who served in World War II. However, many who returned chose not to talk about what they had experienced.

I knew only that my father was a photographer on an airplane that day. His birthday happens to be June 6 and he told me that he had joked with his CO that he should get the day off.

His CO told him...Henry, you’re not going to want to miss this day.

What’s important for us all is to remember how we as a nation came together. And, how we worked with our Allies. We put aside any differences and did what was right for the good of the world.

It’s difficult at times but I do believe in the goodness of men and women. Keep that in your minds and hearts to honor those who have and continue to serve.

And one more thing...Happy Birthday, Dad.

Kathy,

We remembered this morning, and I thought of many things...My father serving as an officer in French Intelligence, my maternal grandmother helping the local church in hiding Jews in Marseille via tunnels and caves that led to the Mediterranean, my mother leading her schoolmates in song, because no one was allowed to talk. This statement was drummed into them "the walls have ears!" referring to the German listening devices...

Ron's dad served also, fortunately stateside, as did his mother by being the secretary of the general on base. we even went on the beach for a walk this morning...It was gloomy and drizzly  A

Kahty I've been watching beautiful tributes to all those that served and lost their lifes in WW2 to keep Europe and the world free. My father served as a Captain in the Army. He did not go to Europe but rather managed a huge warehouse facility in NY to supply the soliders.

Kathy the world needs to honor all those who served in WWII.  Things would be much different today had they not done what they did.

If you a true American at heart this is a day not to be forgotten like many others.  I have traveled to many places and there is no place greater on this earth than America. Unfortunate how many died for the freedoms we have now. That's all that I can think of is the disgrace and dishonor I see in our capital.

I've been watching the D Day events coming from Europe non-stop.   Especially moving to see the return to the beaches of Normandy.

Hi Kathy Streib - very moving tribute to your dad.  I wonder if we have seen any of his documentation of that war and the battles that went on.

I noticed a common theme, the men returning did not talk about it. My father-in-law went through Normandy after D-Day. My son the Marine,  was able to get his grandfather to talk about the war with him. They had something in common. I am so glad Ryan had a chance to talk about this forbidden topic with his grand-dad.

Nina Hollander you and I share the same concerns...that our young people will not remember this day or even know what it is.

Sham Reddy CRS this is a day that means so much and not just to us here.

Barbara Todaro your father and uncles were much like my father. The only other story I remember him telling me was when Clark Gable boarded the plane when he was in the service.

RE Virtual Solutions Thank you. Those of us who are Baby Boomers know of the war but it is so important to share stories with the young people.

God Bless all who serve, however, those who fought in WWII were the toughest, bravest and most patriotic and deserve to be called the greatest generation. The battle of D Day should  be remembered forever.

I fear our children and most of our young adults are uninformed about the sacrifices a volunteer military must endure that provides us the freedoms taken for granted.

Freedom is not FREE, someone paid the ultimate price to secure and sustain it. Let Freedom ring and may God continue to Bless the USA.

Happy Birthday to your dad Kathy. Perhaps you got your creative eye from him seeing that he was a photographer.

This is a day that we should never forget. My Father In Law served in WWII and was a prisoner of war. This was all before my husband was born. Thankfully he came home or things would be a lot different today.

Thankyou for sharing the story and photo of your Dad.  I know what you mean, no one shared stories of the war.  My step-Dad was a Flying Tiger pilot flying relief missions ot China.  My Dad was an airplane mechanic.  None of them told stories.  I remember my step-dad telling me to eat my dinner because "there are starving kids in China."  So very sad that many lives lost.  Happy Birthday to your Dad!
