Hey... here's a thought. Maybe you wanna call your local real estate agency?

Real Estate Agent with Jameson Sotheby's International Realty

I just fielded a call from a gentleman in Louisiana.  He wanted to know what Trulia's number is.  After I recovered my composure (you know... the "wtf... why is he calling ME to ask me Trulia's number?")... I explained that I don't work for Trulia.  Why did you call me to get Trulia's phone number?

It turns out that he's perusing Trulia's website, where at one point in my life I had been a contributor to Trulia's question and answer section.  So he figured since I was a commenter there, I must know how to reach Trulia.

I took a whole 2 seconds and Googled "Trulia's phone number", and gave it to him.  His frustration came through right away... "That's the number I already called, and it was a recording".

I asked him why he was trying to reach Trulia.  It turns out that he was just trying to get some information about a local property.  I suggested he call his local real estate office, and ask for a Realtor to give him the information... He thought that was a great idea... and hadn't thought of that.

Oh, well... back to real life.

Now that is funny ... not to the waste of your time, but the irony of how the general public does think based on web searching.

This post just gave me an idea.  A few years ago I posted about a local international market near my home.  For one reason or another, I have had a bunch of folks over the years call me for the market's phone number.  I think I will go back and edit that post and include the phone number for the market in big font.

If you put ten people in a room and make a statement and then interview them all separately, you get different versions of what was said. The nature of the human is at fault but then again, that was their experience.

What a novel idea, to call someone locally who might be able to actually help rather than some big conglomerate. It is funny who calls us and why.

I just had a call about 2 hours ago from a guy looking at one of my lot listings on Zillow. He wanted information on my 10 acre lot in Unionville. My brain was racing to remember which one he was referring to but I couldn't come up with a 10 acre lot. It ends up being that he was looking at one of my listings that has 3 acres. I asked him where he got the information that it had 10 acres and he said "Zillow". I checked Zillow and ....guess what! Zillow has it wrong. Imagine that! Always call a realtor to get REAL info. That is why we are called REALtors.

Wooded lot in Unionville is 2.9 acres ready to build your new home. Plenty of road frontage and privacy. Minutes from Route 20. Established neighborhood of Terry's Run Estates. Restrictive covenants and road maintenance agreement protect neighborhood charm. Owner financing available. Seller is ready to sell! Recent soil evaluation shows 4 bedroom conventional perc site.

Unfortunately, Z is successful. I believe they want the consumer to forget about calling an agent.

Time and again the information on Z is not accurate.

The fact remains: Real Estate Agents are the experts on the local market and are ready to give the consumer value added.

And I'm sure this is not a solo incident! It's a little scary that he didn't think of calling an agent.

Alan May ~ (as I clear my throat)..... ZG and T have done more than an efficient job at making sure they DON'T call us! I have a feeling it is only going to get harder to convince consumers they should call us directly, ugh! Great article over at Inman

Here's a sneak preview:

Zillow reveals its real ambitions

the lawsuit from Zillow laid bare this revelation. “The online portal, marketing, and iBuying company goes on to say in its lawsuits that the situation ‘greatly harms’ its business, and that it is in fact a direct competitor of Compass,”

I have never heard of that before!

It turns out that he was just trying to get some information about a local property.  I suggested he call his local real estate office, and ask for a Realtor to give him the information...

He thought that was a great idea... and hadn't thought of that.

Alan- this one leaves you shaking your head. I agree with Kat Palmiotti it is concerning that he didn't even think to call a local agent.
